Automated Experiment in 4D-STEM: Exploring Emergent Physics and Structural Behaviors

Kevin M. Roccapriore et al.

Summary: Automated experiments in 4D scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) are used for rapid discovery of local structures, symmetry-breaking distortions, and internal electric and magnetic fields in complex materials. Deep kernel learning enables active exploration of the relationship between local structure and 4D-STEM-based descriptors. Experimental verification includes the use of graphene and a two-dimensional van der Waals material, MnPS3.

Dynamic Tuning of Moire Superlattice Morphology by Laser Modification

Xinyun Wang et al.

Summary: In artificial van der Waals layered devices, twisting the stacking angle has been found to regulate the electronic phases and optical properties. The lattice reconstruction resulting from vdW interlayer interaction has also sparked significant research interest. This work demonstrates that the moire periodicity can be precisely modulated with a localized laser annealing technique, by regulating the interlayer lattice mismatch. The study also reveals the importance of the mismatched lattice constant in determining the lattice mismatch and its contribution equivalent to the twist angle.

Tunable strongly coupled superconductivity in magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene

Jeong Min Park et al.

Summary: Moire superlattices have become a platform for studying correlated physics and superconductivity with unprecedented tunability. This study on magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene reveals a better tunability of electronic structure and superconducting properties than magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene, with implications for the understanding of strongly coupled superconductivity. The results suggest that the system can be electrically tuned close to the crossover to a two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate, indicating the potential for revolutionizing applications of superconductivity.

Mapping Modified Electronic Levels in the Moire Patterns in MoS2/WSe2 Using Low-Loss EELS

Sandhya Susarla et al.

Summary: In this study, the effect of twist angle on interlayer interaction in MoS2/WSe2 heterostructures is explored using high-resolution microscopy techniques. The research found that there is a weaker interaction between layers at higher twist angles (>5 degrees) and a stronger interaction at lower twist angles. Optical response of the heterostructure varies within the moire supercell, with lower energy absorption peak appearing in regions with AA stacking.

Electronic structure of chromium trihalides beyond density functional theory

Swagata Acharya et al.

Summary: The study investigates the electronic band structure of freestanding monolayers of chromium trihalides using an advanced theoretical approach, revealing the changes in the valence band shape with different halogens and the impact of QSG (W) over cap on system localization in comparison to QSGW. Weak perturbations can flip the valence band structures between these two solutions in the materials, highlighting the sensitivity of the band structure to external factors.
