Enhancing the room temperature thermoelectric performance of n-type Bismuth-telluride-based polycrystalline materials by low-angle grain boundaries

Qi Zhang et al.

Summary: Introducing low-angle grain boundaries in n-type Bi2Te2.7Se0.3 through a simple step-hot-pressing procedure resulted in a high room temperature zT value, while also proving effective in promoting the room temperature zT of p-type Bi2Te3-based polycrystals.

Effects of Microstructure and Neodymium Doping on Bi2Te3 Nanostructures: Implications for Thermoelectric Performance

Gil Solomon et al.

Summary: The experiment showed that the electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and charge carrier mobility of the Bi2Te3 samples increase with the reduction of grain size, while Nd-doping reduces these properties and reverses the dependence of mobility on grain size compared to undoped Bi2Te3.

Removing the Oxygen-Induced Donor-like Effect for High Thermoelectric Performance in n-Type Bi2Te3-Based Compounds

Qirui Tao et al.

Summary: Bismuth telluride-based alloys are the best performing thermoelectric materials near room temperature, but the donor-like effect induced by grain size refinement and oxygen in air can dramatically increase carrier concentration and deteriorate thermoelectric performance. Effective removal of this donor-like effect through heat treatment and improving texturing can lead to higher-performance polycrystalline materials for near-room-temperature applications.

Nb-Mediated Grain Growth and Grain-Boundary Engineering in Mg3Sb2-Based Thermoelectric Materials

Ting Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that Nb does not enter the Mg3Sb2 matrix but forms a wetting layer along the grain boundary, modifying the interfacial energy and accelerating grain growth. Modeling suggests that the grain boundary resistivity appears to be reduced by Nb-enrichment. This study confirms grain boundary scattering in Mg3Sb2 and reveals the potential role of metallic additives in enhancing grain growth and reducing grain boundary resistivity.

Thermal Evolution of Internal Strain in Doped PbTe

James P. Male et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that internal strain introduced by doping and ball milling can increase the efficiency of lead chalcogenide thermoelectrics, with the greatest increase observed when doping and ball milling are combined. Co-doping can suppress strain recovery, indicating a strong interaction between dopants and dislocations. Additionally, the influence of defect-induced elastic softening on thermal conductivity in final pressed pellets needs to be examined through measurements of the Debye temperature. These findings provide important guidance for maximizing internal strain and thermoelectric performance in PbTe thermoelectrics.
