Simplistic correlations between molecular electronic properties and inhibition efficiencies: Do they really exist?

Anton Kokalj et al.

Summary: Research evaluated the correlation between molecular electronic parameters and experimentally determined corrosion inhibition efficiencies for a set of 24 heterocyclic organic compounds tested as corrosion inhibitors for copper in 3 wt.% NaCl aqueous solution. The study found no noticeable correlation between the molecular electronic descriptors and the inhibition efficiency. It also introduced a new metric called inhibition power for evaluating the performance of corrosion inhibitors.

Double-Ligand Strategy to Construct an Inhibitor-Loaded Zn-MOF and Its Corrosion Protection Ability for Aluminum Alloy 2A12

You Zhang et al.

Summary: A promising double-ligand strategy involving Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework (Zn-MOF) has been developed for the delivery of active corrosion inhibitors. The synthesized Zn-MOF with benzotriazole (BTA) and 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (H(2)FDA) ligands showed good corrosion inhibition capability on aluminum alloy 2A12 in NaCl solution. The study suggests that inhibitor-loaded MOF nanocontainers have potential for smart inhibitor delivery and effective corrosion protection of 2A12 aluminum alloys.

How relevant are molecular electronic parameters for predicting corrosion inhibition efficiency: imidazoles as corrosion inhibitors of Cu/Zr materials in NaCl solution

Anton Kokalj et al.

Summary: The study critically evaluates the correlations between corrosion inhibition efficiencies and DFT calculated molecular parameters for nine imidazole-based compounds on eight Cu/Zr materials in 3 wt% NaCl solution, considering 31 molecular parameters. It suggests that materials can be classified into two categories based on the effectiveness of molecular electronic parameters in QSAR models, and introduces a symmetrized inhibition efficiency metric to address the asymmetry in evaluating corrosion inhibitors and activators.

Combined Experimental and Theoretical Insights into the Corrosion Inhibition Activity on Carbon Steel Iron of Phosphonic Acids

Aurelia Visa et al.

Summary: The study found that PMG and VPA act as mixed-type inhibitors in 3% NaCl acidic solution, effectively inhibiting the corrosion process of carbon steel iron with inhibition rates of approximately 91% and 85% respectively. A synergic effect of chlorine ions was observed in the presence of PMG. Density functional theory was used to determine the adsorption site and various electronic properties of the inhibitors on the metal surface. The experimental and calculated results are in agreement regarding the inhibition behavior and adsorption of PMG and VPA inhibitors.

Corrosion Prevention of Additively Manufactured Aluminum Packing Devices Developed for Process Intensification of CO2 Capture by Aqueous Amines

Gyoung G. Jang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the corrosion of additively manufactured aluminum packing devices in CO2 absorption columns and evaluates the effectiveness of aqueous PEKK dip coating for corrosion protection. The study reveals that PEKK nanothick layers significantly enhance the corrosion resistance of the 3D printed aluminum structures.

Synergistic effect of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and octylphosphonic acid as corrosion inhibitors for copper and aluminium - An electrochemical, XPS, FTIR and DFT study

Dzevad K. Kozlica et al.

Summary: The inhibitory action of 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI) and octylphosphonic acid (OPA) on copper and aluminum in NaCl solution was investigated. While MBI was found to be a good inhibitor for copper but not for aluminum, OPA behaved complementarily. Evidence suggested that OPA changed the bonding of MBI on the copper surface, resulting in a thicker and more protective organic film.

The Effects of Perfluoroalkyl and Alkyl Backbone Chains, Spacers, and Anchor Groups on the Performance of Organic Compounds as Corrosion Inhibitors for Aluminum Investigated Using an Integrative Experimental-Modeling Approach

I. Milosev et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated the corrosion inhibition ability of surfactant-like compounds on aluminum in NaCl solution. The type and length of anchor groups affect the wettability and barrier properties of the aluminum surface. Thiol and imidazole anchor groups are found to be inefficient inhibitors for corrosion.
