Zhen Chen et al.

Summary: A multi-stimulus-responsive and multifunctional hydrogel system was developed, showing good elasticity, flexibility, and stable conductivity. It can detect human motion, respond to physiological signals, and environmental temperature changes. The bilayer hydrogel system also functions as actuators and has thermoresponsive smart features for displaying and concealing information.

Designing Mechanical Metamaterials with Kirigami-Inspired, Hierarchical Constructions for Giant Positive and Negative Thermal Expansion

Xiaogang Guo et al.

Summary: This study presents a design concept and fabrication strategy for 2D hierarchical metamaterials inspired by kirigami, which can effectively convert thermal mismatch into giant levels of biaxial/uniaxial thermal expansion/shrinkage. Theoretical modeling provides a clear understanding of the microstructure-property relationships and serves as a basis for design choices for desired CTE values. An Ashby plot offers a quantitative comparison of the metamaterials presented in this study to previously reported systems, indicating the ability to substantially enlarge the accessible range of CTE.

A novel hybrid-honeycomb structure: Enhanced stiffness, tunable auxeticity and negative thermal expansion

Xiang-Long Peng et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid-honeycomb structure with enhanced stiffness is proposed, and its effective thermoelastic properties can be widely tunable by tailoring the microstructural geometry and the constituent materials. The structure can be designed to concurrently possess an enhanced stiffness and a high degree of auxeticity and negative thermal expansion by properly choosing the geometrical and material parameters.

Additively manufactured bi-material metamaterial to program a wide range of thermal expansion

Kai Wei et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated a bi-material diamond metamaterial using additive manufacturing, achieving the expected programmable coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). By selecting different material layouts, a wide range of programmable CTEs were obtained, indicating enhanced programmability and laying the foundation for the further design of multilevel and hierarchical metamaterials.

Novel 2D star-shaped honeycombs with enhanced effective Young's modulus and negative Poisson's ratio

Na Xu et al.

Summary: The paper introduces three kinds of novel two-dimensional enhanced star-shaped honeycombs and investigates their mechanical properties through finite-element simulations and experiments. It is found that these structures can effectively regulate the effect of negative Poisson's ratio and improve the effective Young's modulus.

Multi-functional cylindrical metastructures to simultaneously program both thermal expansion and Poisson's ratio

Kai Wei et al.

Summary: A series of multi-functional cylindrical metastructures have been devised to incorporate programmable CTE and PR simultaneously. By modulating the geometric parameters, the PR and CTE of the cylindrical metastructures can be simultaneously programmed to be wide ranges, enabling potential engineering applications where precise control of deformation induced by mechanical and thermal loads is needed.

3D gradient auxetic soft mechanical metamaterials fabricated by additive manufacturing

Reza Hedayati et al.

Summary: This study introduces different patterns of graded distribution of unit cells with positive and negative Poisson's ratio in tubular configurations, showing desired shape changes upon applying external loads. Some patterns demonstrate near-zero Poisson's ratio, while others can convert the tube shapes into various geometries.

Shape optimisation and buckling analysis of large strain zero Poisson's ratio fish-cells metamaterial for morphing structures

Ashutosh Jha et al.

Summary: This article investigates the potential of a large strain morphing skin based on a Zero Poisson's Ratio (ZPR) Fish-Cells metamaterial. A multi-objective genetic algorithm shape optimisation is performed to improve the ZPR characteristics of the Fish-Cells metamaterial, with detailed joint design study to obtain consistent ZPR behaviour over a maximum strain range. The study provides insight into the non-linear behavior of the Fish-Cells ZPR metamaterial and evaluates its performance as a candidate skin for a morphing aircraft wing.
