Strong fish gelatin hydrogels double crosslinked by transglutaminase and carrageenan

Hongrui Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, strong fish gelatin hydrogels were successfully prepared by double crosslinking gelatin with transglutaminase (TGase) and kappa-carrageenan, resulting in significantly improved mechanical properties and thermal stability. The highest gel strength, compression fracture stress, and storage modulus were achieved when the concentration of TGase was 20 U/g gelatin. The thermal stability of the double crosslinked gelatin hydrogels was attributed to the presence of covalent crosslinks. The effect of TGase concentration on the physical properties and microstructure of the double crosslinked hydrogels was analyzed, and the differences between double crosslinked gelatin hydrogels and gelatin hydrogels single crosslinked by TGase or carrageenan were systematically compared.

Chemistry of Chitosan Aerogels: Three-Dimensional Pore Control for Tailored Applications

Satoru Takeshita et al.

Summary: Chitosan, derived from food waste, is a biopolymer with high biocompatibility and easy chemical processability. Porous chitosan materials vary widely in properties, from supercritically dried mesoporous chitosan aerogels to very light freeze-dried macroporous scaffolds. Despite impressive performance at the laboratory scale, the highly porous nature of chitosan amplifies both its beneficial functionality and drawbacks, posing serious barriers to industrialization.
