Ranking of potential hazards from microplastics polymers in the marine environment

Zhihao Yuan et al.

Summary: This study developed a risk assessment model to rank microplastics (MPs) of potential health concern in marine exposure pathways. The model considered parameters such as toxicity potential, particle size distribution, and degradation status. The screening strategy identified certain polymers as top-ranking contributors to the risk. The findings can inform scientific community and policymakers for better management of MPs.

On the Performance of Vertically Aligned Graphene Array Membranes for Desalination

William Toh et al.

Summary: By conducting molecular dynamics simulations, this study investigates the performance of multilayer graphene slit membranes in desalination. It is shown that multilayer slit membranes have the potential to offer improved permeability and outstanding salt rejection. The membrane's permeability can be enhanced by increasing the width of the slits and utilizing a multilayer structure. The flow resistance analysis of the membrane as a combination of electrical resistors in series facilitates the design process of future multilayer membranes.

Nanoplastics and ultrafine microplastic in the Dutch Wadden Sea - The hidden plastics debris?

Dusan Materic et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution in the marine environment is a global problem that has been detected across different regions with varying polymer types and fragment sizes. However, quantifying the presence of nanoplastics and ultrafine microplastics is challenging due to their minuscule nature. This study utilized a novel analytical assay to measure nanoplastics directly from seawater samples and different mesh filters in the Wadden Sea. The results revealed the presence of Polystyrene (PS) and Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanoplastics as well as ultrafine microplastics, indicating a significant contribution to the total plastic budget in the Wadden Sea.

Polymethylmethacrylate nanoplastics effects on the freshwater cnidarian Hydra viridissima

C. Venancio et al.

Summary: The study found that high concentrations of PMMA-NPLs can negatively impact the survival of freshwater cnidarian Hydra viridissima, with tentacle loss and morphological alterations being the main manifestations. New morphological alterations not previously reported were discovered after the exposure period. Exposure to 40 mg PMMA-NPLs/L significantly affected hydra regeneration, indicating the value of Hydra viridissima as a biological model for studying the effects of small plastic particles.
