Nanometer-Scale Precision Polymer Patterning of PDMS: Multiscale Insights into Patterning Efficiency Using Alkyldiynamines

Anni Shi et al.

Summary: Most high-resolution interfacial patterning approaches are limited to crystalline inorganic interfaces. This study explores a method to generate high-resolution functional patterns on soft materials by photopolymerizing highly structured functional alkyldiacetylene patterns on a hard crystalline surface and then transferring them covalently to the soft material. The authors develop a probabilistic model to describe the polymerization and transfer process.

One Nanometer Wide Functional Patterns with a Sub-10 Nanometer Pitch Transferred to an Amorphous Elastomeric Material

Tyson C. Davis et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the transfer of self-assembled and photopolymerized striped monolayers of diacetylene amphiphiles from graphite to polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), allowing precise control over the surface chemistry of elastomers used in various applications. This process creates sub-nm thick precision polymer films with functional patterns, which influence interfacial wetting, reactivity, and template adsorption of ultranarrow gold nanowires. The polarized fluorescence emission of polydiacetylenes reveals polymer location, orientation, and environment, while also preventing engulfment, a common issue in PDMS functionalization.

Oleylamine Impurities Regulate Temperature-Dependent Hierarchical Assembly of Ultranarrow Gold Nanowires on Biotemplated Interfaces

Erin N. Lang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that gold nanowires synthesized with oleylamine ligands undergo thermal transitions in interfacial assembly, with transition temperatures varying with the batch of oleylamine used. Mass spectra and DSC thermograms reveal that the abundance of trans and saturated chains affects these transition temperatures. These findings highlight the potential of using blends of alkyl chains to generate mesoscopic hierarchical nanocrystal assembly at interfaces.

Plenty of Room at the Top: A Multi-Scale Understanding of nm-Resolution Polymer Patterning on 2D Materials

Anni Shi et al.

Summary: Researchers have identified a previously unreported difference in polymerization efficiency between two widely used commercial diynoic acids using a new multi-scale approach. They have also discovered a core design principle for maximizing polymerization efficiency in these on-surface reactions and developed a new monomer with enhanced polymerization efficiency.
