Using Proton Geminate Recombination as a Probe of Proton Migration on Biological Membranes

Alexei A. Stuchebrukhov et al.

Summary: Proton dissociation kinetics and related geminate recombination can serve as probes for proton migration mechanisms. A simple model was developed and applied to analyze results obtained using a photo-induced proton release probe. The existence of a kinetic phase transition between exponential and power-law kinetic phases was observed in systems with dimensionality greater than 2.

Proton Transfer from a Photoacid to a Water Wire: First Principles Simulations and Fast Fluorescence Spectroscopy

Alice R. Walker et al.

Summary: Proton transfer reactions between HPTS and water were studied using fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations, showing rapid proton release and migration along a water wire before localizing on a single water molecule. The emission wavelength was found to have a linear relationship with the proton distance, indicating its potential use as a ruler for proton distance.

Self-Propulsion of Droplets via Light-Stimuli Rapid Control of Their Surface Tension

Anna Yucknovsky et al.

Summary: This study focuses on self-propelling droplet systems responsive to pH gradients, using photoacids and photobases for light-stimuli ultrafast response and control. The movement and directionality of self-propelled droplets can be controlled by introducing the photoacid/base in different ways, resulting in a rapid change in surface tension inducing movement. The high versatility and record-breaking ultrafast response to light make these systems highly attractive for various controlled cargo-carrier systems.

Light-Modulated Cationic and Anionic Transport across Protein Biopolymers**

Alex Burnstine-Townley et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates light-modulation of the chemical nature and ionic charge carrier concentration within protein-based biopolymers functionalized with photoacids or photobases. Electrical measurements showed an impressive light-modulated increase in ionic conductivity for both types of functionalized biopolymers. Protons are suggested as the charge carriers for the photoacid-functionalized biopolymer, while water-derived anionic hydroxides are suggested as the charge carriers for the photobase-functionalized biopolymer.
