Microstructural study and mechanical characterisation of heat-treated direct metal laser sintered Ti6Al4V for biomedical applications

Dheepa Srinivasan et al.

Summary: This study examined the effectiveness of heat treatment in vacuum and in air at 800 degrees Celsius and 1100 degrees Celsius. Minimal differences in microstructure and mechanical properties were found when heat treated in air or vacuum at 800 degrees Celsius. Heat treatment at 1100 degrees Celsius was feasible in vacuum but not in air.

Effect of Laser Shock Peening on Properties of Heat-Treated Ti-6Al-4V Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

Inkyu Yeo et al.

Summary: By combining laser shock peening (LSP) with post-heat treatment, enhanced surface properties, improved toughness, and restored surface hardness and wear resistance can be achieved in Ti-6Al-4V LPBF fabricated products. This approach also effectively reduces the corrosion rate, showing promising results for enhancing both impact toughness and surface properties in LPBF-fabricated Ti-6Al-4V products.

Fatigue crack growth behavior of laser powder bed fusion additive manufactured Ti-6Al-4V: Roles of post heat treatment and build orientation

M. Tarik Hasib et al.

Summary: The study found that the fatigue crack growth rates of Ti-6Al-4V material are influenced by build orientation and post heat treatments, while texture and build orientation have minimal impact on slow crack growth rates and fatigue thresholds. The definition of fatigue thresholds lies in the ability to transfer slip from one α' / α laths to another, with some effect of crack closure induced by roughness. The transition away from microstructure sensitive fatigue crack growth occurred when the packet/colony size equaled the cyclic plastic zone size.

The effect of post-processing heat treatment on the microstructure, residual stress and mechanical properties of selective laser melted 316L stainless steel

Qi Chao et al.

Summary: Additively manufactured 316L austenitic stainless steel was subjected to various heat treatments to study the evolution of residual stress, microstructure, and mechanical properties. Significant compressive residual stress was revealed in the as-built condition, with stress relief achieved at different temperatures. Microstructural changes, such as recrystallization, coarsening of nano-inclusions, and precipitation of embrittling phases, were observed during the heat treatment process, impacting the material's ductility and strength. The study established important relationships between heat treatment, properties, and microstructural changes for the structural application of SLM 316L.

Summary: The study found that the wear rate of Ti6Al4V alloy initially increased and then gradually decreased with increasing heat treatment temperature, with the lowest value obtained at 1060℃, showing the best wear resistance. Higher applied loads led to larger wear rates and lower coefficients of friction. The wear mechanism was dependent on microstructure transformation, micro-hardness, and applied load, which were discussed in detail.
