A review of circular economy strategies for mine tailings

Paivi Kinnunen et al.

Summary: There are various practices and potential for transforming mining waste into valuable products. The amount of generated waste poses a challenge to implementing a full circular economy. A combination of different circular economy approaches is needed to manage mining waste streams holistically. Technologies exist for metal recovery from tailings and utilization of mineral residues. The institutional framework and digitalization play important roles in the valorization of mine waste and identifying its potential for circularity and traceability.

Stratigraphy, provenance and localisation of the titanomagnetite placer at Waikato North Head, South Auckland, New Zealand

Robert L. Brathwaite et al.

Summary: The sand sequence at the north head of the Waikato River consists of Awhitu Sands, Hood Sands, and Mitiwai Sands, with rich titanomagnetite deposits. The titanomagnetite in the sands is mainly derived from andesitic rocks of the Taranaki Volcanoes 220km to the south, indicating a multistage formation process.

Production of Pure Vanadium: Industry Review and Feasibility Study of Electron Beam Melt Refining of V-Al Alloys

Devin Rappleye et al.

Summary: The vanadium industry has undergone significant changes in the past two decades, with the emergence of vanadium redox flow batteries and the increasing demand for high-strength steel. Pure vanadium production is considered a potential vulnerability in certain nations, with only two identified global producers. Exploratory electron beam melt refining trials offer a potential method to produce pure vanadium with minimal processing to mitigate potential risks.

World-Class Fe-Ti-V Oxide Deposits Formed in Feeder Conduits by Removing Cotectic Silicates

Zhong-Jie Bai et al.

Summary: Research has shown that the Hongge intrusion hosts abundant Fe-Ti-V oxides, exceeding typical content found in mafic-ultramafic intrusions globally, with the vanadium content remaining relatively constant throughout the intrusion. Additionally, clinopyroxene phenocrysts from the underlying basalts were found to contain inclusions of Fe-Ti-V oxides, suggesting they crystallized at depth from magma saturated in oxides and were transported to the surface.

A review of polymetallic mineralization in lower Cambrian black shales in South China: Combined effects of seawater, hydrothermal fluids, and biological activity

Chunhua Shi et al.

Summary: The study systematically compared the geological and mineralization characteristics of various polymetallic mineralization types in lower Cambrian black shales from South China and proposed a genetic model involving three controls for the mineral deposits hosted in the black shales. Further research on the multi-stage and complex ore-forming processes, especially the role of biological activity in mineralization, is needed and may have general significance for similar deposits worldwide.

Molybdenum-uranium-vanadium geochemistry in the lower Paleozoic Alum Shale of Scandinavia: Implications for vanadium exploration

Leibo Bian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hyper-enrichments of molybdenum (Mo), uranium (U), and vanadium (V) in the Alum Shale of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, and Estonia. The distribution of Mo and U is mainly associated with organic matter, with the highest concentrations found in the Furongian part of the Alum Shale. Vanadium content increases gradually from the Miaolingian to the Furongian and significantly in the Early Ordovician, with the highest concentrations located in southern Sweden.

Depicting the historical pollution in a Pb-Zn mining/smelting site in Kabwe (Zambia) using tree rings

Rafael Baieta et al.

Summary: Historical Pb-Zn mining and smelting activities in Kabwe, Zambia have resulted in it becoming one of the most polluted cities in the world. High concentrations of metal elements were found in soil and tree samples, with closer proximity to the smelter showing higher levels. The main sources of metal contamination were confirmed to be local ores and smelting slags, with a linear relationship between metal concentrations and historical production.

W. D. Smith et al.

Summary: This paper compiled data on 565 layered and differentiated igneous intrusions globally, outlining their characteristics such as location, age, size, geotectonic setting, parent magma, crystallisation sequence, and mineral deposits. The distribution of these intrusions broadly correlates with the amalgamation and break-up of supercontinents throughout geological time, with no obvious changes in size and mineral inventory observed.

Clean production technology for effective recovery of vanadium from shale: Interaction between activators and vanadium-loaded minerals

Wang Li et al.

Summary: A pre-decarburization activated roasting and mild acid leaching process was developed for the recovery of vanadium from shale, with NaCO3 and K2SO4 identified as the most effective additives for promoting the production of water-soluble vanadate. The process resulted in a 92% leaching efficiency of vanadium under mild acid conditions and significantly increased the amount of water-soluble vanadium, reducing acid consumption and impurities. Ultimately, V2O5 with purity of 99.5% was obtained after ion exchange, precipitation, and calcination.
