Intensifier Usage in Nigerian English: A Corpus-Based Approach

Foluke Olayinka Unuabonah et al.

Summary: This study explores the patterns of intensifier usage in Nigerian English and compares it to British English. The results suggest that Nigerian English users use intensifiers less frequently, exhibit lower variability in register, and show a distinct preference for a few individual intensifiers. However, Nigerian English does not have a restricted inventory of intensifiers compared to British English. The similarities and differences in intensifier usage may be linked to the linguistic nature of some intensifiers and the context of interaction.
