The Impact of Health on Labor Supply near Retirement

Summary: Estimates of the impact of health on employment using different methods and health measures show similar results when using rich objective measures. A single health index is sufficient to capture the relevant health variation for employment. Health deterioration explains a significant portion of the decline in employment, particularly in the United States and for the low educated.

Retirement, social support and mental well-being: a couple-level analysis

Summary: This study found that retirement does not have a significant impact on social support, but individuals with high social support experience a slight improvement in mental well-being after retirement. Women's retirement causally affects mental well-being, and the impact is similar for those with low/high social support. The spill-over benefits from spousal retirement are greater for individuals with low social support.
