Kinetics of phase precipitation in Al-Mg-Si alloys subjected to equal-channel angular pressing during subsequent heating

N. R. Bochvar et al.

Summary: Effects of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with subsequent aging on the microstructure and phase transformation of Al-Mg2Si alloys with combined (Sc + Zr) and (Sc + Hf) additions were studied. The microstructure processed by ECAP and the precipitation of phases of Al-Mg2Si alloys were thoroughly examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It has been revealed that transition metals added to Al-Mg2Si alloys do not change the character of decomposition of the solid solution but shift the precipitation temperatures of the beta, beta' and beta phases to lower temperatures compared to the quenched state. Recovery processes have been revealed in the temperature range 200-600 degrees C based on the changes in hardness and electrical resistivity of Al-Mg2Si alloys with additions of transition metals (Sc + Zr) and (Sc + Hf) and without them after ECAP.

Thermomechanical roll bonding of Al-6063 strips

Akash Biradar et al.

Summary: Roll bonding followed by solution heat treatment is a key process for improving the strength and ductility of Al-6063 strips. Experimental results showed successful bonding at 723K with superior mechanical properties, and a post-heat treatment process at 523K for 2 hours further optimized the combination of strength and ductility. The absence of bonding at room temperature and warm working conditions was also analyzed to understand the limitations of the process.

Summary: In this study, the evolution of second-phase particles in a TRC Al-Mg-Si alloy and its influence on recrystallization texture and mechanical anisotropy were analyzed. Homogenization significantly affects particle evolution, which in turn affects the material's anisotropy. The distributions of second-phase particles control recrystallization texture and have a significant impact on mechanical properties.

Grain refinement of Al -Mg -Si alloy without any mechanical deformation and matrix phase transformation via cyclic electro-pulsing treatment

Dong Pan et al.

Summary: The grain refinement of AA6061 alloy was successfully achieved through cyclic electropulsing treatment without any plastic deformation or matrix transformation. The dislocation density, texture intensity, and distribution of crystal planes in the sample were enhanced by cyclic electropulse treatment, leading to improved strength and ductility of the alloy. The yield strength and elongation of the optimized cyclic electropulse-treated sample were enhanced by 72.1% and 2.1% compared to conventional-treated samples, indicating the potential of electropulsing treatment for grain refinement of NP&D materials.

Jing-Hua Zheng et al.

Summary: This study provides direct and systematic experimental data by revealing the evolution of dislocation density and grain size of AA6082 alloy under different conditions, using Electron Back Scattering Diffraction (EBSD) technique. The results show continuously increased geometrically necessary dislocation densities during hot deformation, as well as the presence of dislocation channel structures and dynamic recrystallization. The study is the first to visualize high temperature and high strain rate induced dislocation distributions over a relatively large area, offering valuable insights for improving physically based material models.

The nanocluster formation and vacancy behavior of step-quenched Al-Mg-Si alloy and its effect on transition to β phase via advanced methods

SeongNyeong Kim et al.

Summary: The effect of step-quenching on two/multi-step aging and bake-hardening response in Al-Mg-Si alloy was investigated, showing that step-quenching is highly effective in suppressing negative effects of natural aging compared to pre-aging treatment. The characteristic behaviors of nano-clusters formed by step-quenching and pre-aging treatments were found to be different, with step-quenching likely forming Si?V complexes and inducing the formation of Mg?Si clusters with higher atomic density. This alloy with great bake-hardening response has promising potential for automotive outer panel applications.

The effect of chemical patterning induced by cyclic plasticity on the formation of precipitates during aging of an Al-Mg-Si alloy

Liting Shi et al.

Summary: Cyclic deformation of solution treated AA6061 results in a high number density of Mg/Si clusters, contributing to a strength comparable to T6 condition. Subsequent heat treatment further increases strength, with a shorter aging time needed compared to traditional treatments. The presence of clusters plays a crucial role in promoting a higher number density of precipitates during aging.

Microstructural evolution at the initial stage of two-step aging in an Al-Mg-Si alloy characterized by a three dimensional atom probe

Min Young Song et al.

Summary: The microstructural evolution at the initial stage of two-step aging in an Al-0.9 Mg-1.0 Si alloy was studied using 3DAP, revealing changes in cluster composition and size under different aging conditions. Smaller clusters with lower number density were observed after two-step aging, indicating dissolution of nanoclusters occurred at the initial stage. Pre-beta formation was dominant during two-step aging, with clusters acting as nuclei for precipitates with similar Mg:Si ratios. A relationship between hardness change, volume fraction, and number density was also analyzed.

Jonas K. Sunde et al.

Summary: This study examined an Al-0.54Mg-0.38Si (at.%) conductor alloy (6101) subjected to two different thermomechanical processing routes. The results showed that re-ageing after rolling caused a rapid increase in electrical conductivity, which could largely be explained by two precipitate formation mechanisms leading to increased solute depletion of the Al matrix in the deformed material, as quantified by atom probe tomography. Clear differences in precipitate distributions between the deformed and undeformed material were also observed.
