Hyperpartisan news: Rethinking the media for populist politics

Maria Rae

Summary: This article argues that online media sites such as Breitbart News and The Canary, as powerful new agents, need to be understood within the context of populist politics. The author suggests that labeling them as 'hyperpartisan' is more fitting than alternative media, as it reflects populism's 'us' versus 'them' ideology. Finally, a deliberate provocation is made to name these digital start-ups as news to conceptualize them as disruptive new media forces.
