Online teaching of basic surgical skills to medical students during the COVID-19 pandemic: a case-control study

Summary: This study compared the surgical skills competency of medical students taught by a new web-based surgical skill learning session (WSSL) with those taught by face-to-face tutorials. Results showed that there was no significant difference in surgical skills performance between the two groups, and WSSL students did not encounter difficulties with program or hardware installation.

Summary: The transition of medical education to virtual settings during the COVID-19 pandemic has been challenging, especially in adapting clinical skills teaching. A collaborative project at Queen's University Belfast utilized virtual OSCEs to improve students' confidence in key clinical skills. Peer-led approaches have the potential to disrupt traditional hierarchies in medical education and highlight the importance of involving students early in their careers.
