This paper discusses the impact of trauma experiences, culture, and racism on older adults' ability to age in place. Age-related stressors may cause the reemergence of trauma memories and reactions, thus affecting the ability to live independently. The paper provides assessment, case examples, and best practice issues.
Trauma experiences and symptomatology may be overlooked by clinicians as a significant impediment to aging in place. This paper presents the types of traumas and the impact of culture and racism on older adults. Additionally, age-related stressors may influence the reemergence of trauma memories and reactions and therefore, impact aging in place. Assessment, case examples, and best practice issues are presented.
