Powerful knowledge, disciplinary knowledge, curriculum knowledge: educational knowledge in question

Johan Muller

Summary: This paper explores the sociological origins of the "knowledge turn" and the concept of "powerful knowledge," starting with Basil Bernstein's work and its further development in various contexts of curriculum studies. The paper categorizes educators' different motivations for engaging with curriculum as "curriculum of" and "curriculum for." It also discusses the unique impact of specialized knowledge and suggests strategies for addressing it. Ultimately, the paper suggests potential pathways for integrating curriculum theory and subject didactics in a productive dialogue.

The Curriculum Design Coherence Model in the Knowledge-Rich School Project

Elizabeth Rata

Summary: This Research Report describes the trialling of the Curriculum Design Coherence (CDC) Model in the Knowledge-Rich School Project in New Zealand. The findings suggest that a CDC Model curriculum development design programme may be useful more widely. The CDC Model achieves conceptual coherence and progression by using generalising subject concepts, connected content, and subject concepts in competencies for real-life application.
