Considerations on D-mannose Mechanism of Action and Consequent Classification of Marketed Healthcare Products

Francesco Scaglione et al.

Summary: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common disorders that affect adult women, often caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli. Recurrent UTIs are frequently treated with non-prescribed antibiotics by patients, leading to increased antibiotic resistance issues. D-mannose has been proposed as an alternative approach for managing UTIs due to its ability to inhibit bacterial adhesion to the urothelium.

Role of D-Mannose in the Prevention of Recurrent Uncomplicated Cystitis: State of the Art and Future Perspectives

Cosimo De Nunzio et al.

Summary: D-mannose has the potential to play a role in non-antimicrobial prophylaxis of recurrent UTIs in women, either alone or in combination with dietary supplements or Lactobacillus. However, the quality of existing studies is low, and further well-designed research is urgently needed to definitively support its role in managing recurrent UTIs in women.

A prospective randomized study to define the role of low dose continuous prophylactic antibiotics and anti-adherence agents in altering the microbial colonization related to indwelling double-J stents

Summary: This study evaluated the role of cranberry extract and D-mannose in preventing bacterial colonization in patients with indwelling DJ stents. While cranberry extract may reduce urine colonization, it did not have a significant impact on stent related symptoms or febrile UTIs. Further evaluation is needed to determine the clinical significance of cranberry extract in this setting.

Efficacy of an orally administered combination of Lactobacillus paracasei LC11, cranberry and D-mannose for the prevention of uncomplicated, recurrent urinary tract infections in women

Summary: The study demonstrated that prophylactic treatment with Lactoflorene Cist(R) was effective and safe in managing recurrent uncomplicated UTIs in premenopausal women, with significantly lower UTI recurrence rates in the treatment groups compared to the control group. No adverse events were reported in the treated patients.
