Are deaths from COVID-19 associated with higher rates of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) than deaths from other causes?

Summary: This study investigates the risk factors for Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results show that shorter time since death, deaths of siblings and others, and deaths from accidents and homicides are associated with a higher potential risk of probable PGD. On the other hand, deaths of extended family and from dementia are associated with a lower potential risk of probable PGD.

Pandemic Grief Scale: A screening tool for dysfunctional grief due to a COVID-19 loss

Summary: This study developed and evaluated the Pandemic Grief Scale (PGS) to identify dysfunctional grief associated with COVID-19 deaths. The PGS, based on a sample of 831 adults who lost someone to COVID-19, demonstrated good reliability and validity, and effectively measured grief related to COVID-19. It can accurately distinguish individuals with and without dysfunctional grief and has potential applications for clinical research and practice.

Dying, Death and Mourning amid COVID-19 Pandemic in Kashmir: A Qualitative Study

Summary: This study used a qualitative approach to examine the changing nature of death, dying and mourning among Muslims of Kashmir as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings revealed that most of the deceased died in isolation, without anyone around. The lack of in-person support during the mourning process and the inability to perform last rites prolonged grief among the bereaved and affected their overall well-being.

Validation of the prolonged grief scale (PG-13) and investigation of the prevalence and risk factors of prolonged grief disorder in Turkish bereaved samples

Summary: The aim of this study was to validate the Turkish version of the Prolonged Grief Scale (PG-13) and to determine the prevalence and predictors of prolonged grief disorder (PGD). The results supported the one-factor structure of PG-13 and found lower level meaning reconstruction and unnatural cause of death as risk factors for PGD.

Validation of the new DSM-5-TR criteria for prolonged grief disorder and the PG-13-Revised (PG-13-R) scale

Summary: Based on data from Yale University, Utrecht University, and Oxford University, the American Psychiatric Association has recently included Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) as a new mental disorder in the DSM-5-TR. The study found that PG-13-R grief symptoms represent a unidimensional construct with high internal consistency, and the PGD diagnosis was distinct from other mental disorders like PTSD, MDD, and GAD at baseline.

Summary: This study demonstrates that individuals with intellectual disabilities are capable of self-reporting symptoms of complicated grief, with bereaved individuals showing more separation distress-related symptoms.
