Risk factors for dysfunctional grief and functional impairment for all causes of death during the COVID-19 pandemic: The mediating role of meaning

Summary: The study found that there were no significant differences in grief experiences among those who lost loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic, regardless of the cause of death. All groups showed clinical levels of functional impairment equal to or greater than those diagnosed with grief disorders before the pandemic. Disrupted meaning played a partial role in mediating the relationship between risk factors and functional impairment and dysfunctional grief symptoms.

An evaluation of common risk factors for prolonged grief disorder using the international classification of diseases-11 criteria

Summary: When using the ICD-11 diagnostic criteria, only female gender and high levels of pre-loss contact were identified as increasing risk of diagnosis in separate samples. The most replicable results across samples were found when using the summed PG-13 symptom scores. Younger age and more pre-loss contact with the deceased were associated with higher symptom levels when using the PG-13 total score, and this replicated in all three studies.

Valid measurement of DSM-5 persistent complex bereavement disorder and DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 prolonged grief disorder: The Traumatic Grief Inventory-Self Report Plus (TGI-SR plus )

Summary: The study examined the psychometric properties of a new self-report measure, TGI-SR+, for assessing criteria sets of DSM-5 PCBD, DSM-5-TR PGD, and ICD-11 PGD. Results showed good internal consistency, temporal stability, and validity, supporting TGI-SR+ as a reliable measure for assessing grief symptoms. Optimal clinical cut-offs for probable cases of DSM-5 PCBD, DSM-5-TR PGD, and ICD-11 PGD were identified.

Same Name, Same Content? Evaluation of DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 Prolonged Grief Criteria

Summary: This study investigated the concordance between the diagnostic criteria for prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in DSM-5-TR and ICD-11. The results showed significant differences in diagnostic rates, mainly due to the time criterion and the presentation of core symptoms. With the potential increase in PGD prevalence rates during the COVID-19 pandemic, practitioners should be cautious about the diagnostic rule used and consider a stepped-care approach if there is uncertainty about the presence of full-blown PGD.

Grieving During the COVID-19 Pandemic: In-Person and Virtual Goodbye

Summary: This study explored the relationship between different ways of saying goodbye to dying family members or friends during the COVID-19 pandemic and the psychological distress and complicated grief experienced by individuals. The findings showed that saying goodbye virtually was associated with higher levels of psychological distress and complicated grief, while physically attending a funeral or memorial service was associated with lower levels of psychological distress.

Turkish Version of the Traumatic Grief Inventory-Self Report (TGI-SR): Validity and reliability

Summary: The aim of this study was to translate the Traumatic Grief Inventory-Self Report (TGI-SR) into Turkish and test its validity in a Turkish sample. The results revealed a correlated two-factor structure for the 18-item version, indicating good reliability of the scale. Correlation analysis showed a positive relationship between TGI-SR scores and grief-related symptoms. Latent Profile Analysis indicated significant differences in event impact, depression, anxiety, and stress levels among different profiles. These findings suggest that the Turkish version of the TGI-SR is a valid and reliable tool.

Pandemic Grief Scale: A screening tool for dysfunctional grief due to a COVID-19 loss

Summary: This study developed and evaluated the Pandemic Grief Scale (PGS) to identify dysfunctional grief associated with COVID-19 deaths. The PGS, based on a sample of 831 adults who lost someone to COVID-19, demonstrated good reliability and validity, and effectively measured grief related to COVID-19. It can accurately distinguish individuals with and without dysfunctional grief and has potential applications for clinical research and practice.
