Improving instruction and sexual health literacy with serious games and gamification interventions: an outlook to students' learning outcomes and gender differences

Hussein Haruna et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the effect of game mechanics on improving learning outcomes through the use of serious games and gamification. The results show that the interventions led to improved learning outcomes, with serious games and gamification outperforming conventional training. The study suggests that employing a combination of game elements can serve as a recipe for interactive learning and improve learning outcomes.

Pathways to Student Motivation: A Meta-Analysis of Antecedents of Autonomous and Controlled Motivations

Julien S. Bureau et al.

Summary: Students' self-determined motivation is associated with higher academic well-being, persistence, and achievement, and is dependent on the satisfaction of psychological needs - relatedness, competence, and autonomy - which are facilitated through supportive behaviors from notable others. The study shows that teacher autonomy support predicts students' need satisfaction and self-determined motivation more strongly than parental autonomy support, while competence is the most positive predictor of self-determined motivation.

Morphology-A Gateway to Advanced Language: Meta-Analysis of Morphological Knowledge in Language-Minority Children

Siri Steffensen Bratlie et al.

Summary: Knowledge of morphemes, the smallest meaningful units in language, is crucial for vocabulary and reading comprehension. This meta-analysis examines the differences in morphological knowledge between language-minority and language-majority children. The findings show that language-majority children have a greater knowledge of morphemes compared to language-minority children. The study also reveals that oral tests and tests of expressive language yield larger differences than written tests and tests of receptive language.

Social robots and gamification for technology supported learning: An empirical study on engagement and motivation

Melissa Donnermann et al.

Summary: Enhancing learning scenarios with social robots and gamification elements has shown positive impacts on motivation and engagement, but combining both in a learning environment did not significantly increase engagement or motivation. In fact, combining both additions resulted in lower engagement, contrary to expectations. Further research is needed to understand the reasons for this finding and potential improvements for future studies.

From top to bottom: How positions on different types of leaderboard may affect fully online student learning performance, intrinsic motivation, and course engagement

Shurui Bai et al.

Summary: The study found that an absolute leaderboard helps intensify students' sense of competition, while a relative leaderboard is more conducive to showcasing student performance. Students in different positions showed similar levels of learning performance and course engagement on the absolute leaderboard, but higher-ranking students exhibited higher intrinsic motivation; whereas on the relative leaderboard, students in the top third performed better.

Revealing the theoretical basis of gamification: A systematic review and analysis of theory in research on gamification, serious games and game-based learning*

Jeanine Krath et al.

Summary: Theoretical foundations of gamification, serious games, and game-based learning are diverse and share common core assumptions. Gamification works by illustrating goals and their relevance, guiding users, providing immediate feedback, reinforcing good performance, and simplifying content, among other principles. Social gamification elements can enable social comparison and support collective goals.

Gamification of in-class activities in flipped classroom lectures

Michael Sailer et al.

Summary: The study found that using a gamified flipped classroom approach in large lectures can enhance students' application-oriented knowledge, improve learning process performance, increase intrinsic motivation, and enhance social relatedness, but does not have a significant impact on competence need satisfaction. The results also indicate that game design elements such as points and team leaderboards can trigger specific mechanisms and affect learning outcomes through learning process performance.
