Strategic mineral resources: Availability and future estimations for the renewable energy sector

Summary: In order to control global temperature rise, the use of renewable energy sources is crucial, yet material requirements for building new renewable power systems need to be considered. Thirteen strategic elements in the renewable energy sector have been analyzed, with cobalt, lithium, tellurium, and nickel identified as the most critical. Effective resource utilization and policies are needed to prevent resource depletion.

Summary: This study proposes hypotheses about the production quota policy and sustainable supply capacity of critical minerals, and analyzes a balanced panel of critical minerals from 1999 to 2017 using the generalized synthetic control method. The research findings suggest that the effects of the policy become significant at a later stage, and effective implementation of the policy can lower the supply disruption risk.

Summary: The demand for highly specialized materials for de-carbonization of energy, smart devices, and the internet of things has raised concerns over the supply of critical elements. By increasing the capture of these elements from existing operations within the primary copper pyrometallurgical supply chain, a more resilient and sustainable supply can be achieved. Enrichment points in smelter dusts, refinery slimes, and electrolytes can be targeted for additional recovery of critical elements.
