How China's high-speed rail promote local economy: New evidence from county-level panel data

Summary: This study uses Chinese county-level panel data to examine the impact of high-speed rail (HSR) connection on local economic growth. The findings indicate that HSR connection promotes economic growth, and this effect becomes more pronounced as the HSR operation time increases. Additionally, HSR connection may influence the relationship between local and neighboring areas, with a cooperative relationship occurring at the average level of industry structures when both areas are HSR-connected. Moreover, HSR connectivity not only optimizes the allocation of production factors within urban agglomerations but also generally promotes regional economic convergence.

Summary: China's urban-rural relationships have undergone significant changes due to population flows. This study examines the urban-rural interaction in the Wuhan urban agglomeration and reveals the spatial and temporal characteristics of this interaction. The findings show that farmland circulation is relatively low in the Wuhan urban agglomeration, but the central city has a higher level of social integration. The unsynchronized interaction of resources in urban and rural areas needs to be addressed.

Impacts of high-speed rail development on urban land expansion and utilization intensity in China

Summary: This study reveals the joint effect of high-speed railways (HSR) on urban land expansion (ULE) and urban land-use intensity (ULUI). HSR opening and HSR station distance both have notably positive effects on ULE, particularly in central and eastern region cities and large cities of China. The impact of HSR station distance on ULUI is negative.
