Solid Waste Management in the Context of a Circular Economy in the MENA Region

Safwat Hemidat et al.

Summary: Solid waste management in most MENA countries is characterized by lack of planning, improper disposal, inadequate collection services, inappropriate technologies, and insufficient funding. These countries are now seeking to embrace the circular economy by moving away from traditional waste disposal towards more intelligent waste treatment and resource efficiency. This paper provides an overview of municipal solid waste management systems and material and energy recovery in the context of the circular economy in selected MENA countries. The study shows that waste management issues in these countries are mainly influenced by political factors and the decentralized nature of waste management. There is a need for a paradigm shift from a linear economy model to a circular economy model, where waste is seen as a resource.

Successful and stable operation of anaerobic thermophilic co-digestion of sun-dried sugar beet pulp and cow manure under short hydraulic retention time

Xiomara Gomez-Quiroga et al.

Summary: This study investigates the biogas production from sun dried sugar beet pulp and cow manure through anaerobic co-digestion. The results demonstrate that a short hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5 days and an organic loading rate (OLR) of 12.47 gVS/Lreactor center dot d achieve the best overall system performance in terms of stability, biogas production, and organic matter removal. The gradual increase in OLR allows for system control and timely intervention, preventing irreversible process disturbances.

Mitigation of ammonia inhibition in anaerobic digestion of nitrogen-rich substrates for biogas production by ammonia stripping: A review

Dominic Yellezuome et al.

Summary: This review article provides a comprehensive overview of current progress in ammonia stripping technologies applicable to anaerobic digestion systems. The findings indicate that the performance of an ammonia stripping process largely depends on the pH, temperature, and gas flow rate, and optimization is required to attain high efficiency. Side-stream and post-treatment ammonia stripping have the potential to significantly reduce ammonia concentration and avert ammonia inhibition during biogas production.
