Revisiting Values and Self-Esteem: A Large-Scale Study in the United States

Summary: Person-culture fit perspectives suggest that individuals have higher self-esteem when their values align with the sociocultural environment they live in. However, this study found no evidence to support the hypothesis that value congruence positively predicts self-esteem. Instead, it revealed both linear and curvilinear associations between individual-level values and self-esteem, as well as the moderating role of state-level values on the relationship between values and self-esteem.
