Revisiting Values and Self-Esteem: A Large-Scale Study in the United States

Hongfei Du et al.

Summary: Person-culture fit perspectives suggest that individuals have higher self-esteem when their values align with the sociocultural environment they live in. However, this study found no evidence to support the hypothesis that value congruence positively predicts self-esteem. Instead, it revealed both linear and curvilinear associations between individual-level values and self-esteem, as well as the moderating role of state-level values on the relationship between values and self-esteem.

What predicts perceived economic inequality? The roles of actual inequality, system justification, and fairness considerations

Hongfei Du et al.

The study also shows that in more unequal areas, people perceive less income inequality.

A Tale of Peaks and Valleys: Sinusoid Relationship Patterns Between Mountainousness and Basic Human Values

Stefan Stieger et al.

Summary: This study shows that altitude and mountainousness are related to increased conservation values and decreased hedonism among individuals, with generally small effect sizes compared to other socio-ecological predictors. The findings align with the dual-pressure model of ecological stress, suggesting that being open-minded and endorsing conservative values may be more adaptive in mountainous regions.

Perceived income inequality increases status seeking among low social class individuals

Hongfei Du et al.

Summary: This study aimed to establish a causal relation between income inequality and status seeking by investigating the effects of perceived income inequality on the pursuit of positional goods. The results showed that perceived income inequality increased the pursuit of positional goods among participants with low social status, but not among participants with high social status. The findings have theoretical and practical implications that are discussed in the study.

Income Inequality Reduces Civic Honesty

Hongfei Du et al.

Summary: The study found that income inequality has a significant impact on reducing civic honesty, with citizens in countries with higher income inequality being less likely to return a lost wallet. Experimental results also showed that income inequality reduced individuals' personal desire to return a lost wallet. The convergence of findings from two studies highlights the crucial role played by income inequality in diminishing civic honesty.
