How can we test plastic pollution perceptions and behavior? A feasibility study with Danish children participating in the Mass Experiment

Nikoline G. Oturai et al.

Summary: Research suggests that behavior change programs can be effective solutions to plastic pollution, alongside traditional environmental policy-making, by encouraging change in perception and behavior to promote increased circularity in consumption and waste handling. Predictors of pro-environmental behavior include concern, social norms, nature-connectedness, identity, and self-efficacy. The study tested a nation-wide citizen science intervention with school students in Denmark, finding no significant overall effect on team, risk perception, pro-environmental behaviors, self-efficacy, or empowerment, but highlighting unexpected age effects and caution needed in designing such activities for younger children.
