A contextual framework for understanding impression management

Lynn A. McFarland et al.

Summary: Research on impression management within organizations is extensive and valuable, but inconsistent findings limit clear conclusions. The current perspectives mainly focus on face-to-face communication, while technology and world events have changed workplace interactions. This literature review integrates research from related literatures to examine how context influences impression motivation and construction, and proposes that evaluative potential and workplace interaction nature moderate this relationship. The contextual framework can enhance understanding, stimulate new research, and provide practical recommendations for HR professionals.

Abusive Supervisory Behavior Aimed at Raising Work Group Performance

Parviz Farmanara

Summary: This study found that the lack of empathy from superiors towards their subordinates could lead to a belief in the effectiveness of harsh management tactics, resulting in abrasive supervisory conduct and a climate of abusive supervision perceived collectively by subordinates. Additionally, social dominance orientation (SDO) of upper-level managers was found to moderate these relationships through cognitive activation of abusive supervisory values.
