Destination net-zero: what does the international energy agency roadmap mean for tourism?

From Djerba to Glasgow: have declarations on tourism and climate change brought us any closer to meaningful climate action?

Daniel Scott et al.

Summary: While the Glasgow Declaration includes some positive advances, it repeats themes and recommended actions introduced in previous declarations over the last decade and shows inaction on past recommendations. There is no evidence that the declarations have changed the trajectory of sector emissions growth or influenced the integration of climate change into tourism policy and planning. The Glasgow Declaration falls short of stimulating the systematic change needed for the net-zero transition and rapid climate changes.

Wave of net zero emission targets opens window to meeting the Paris Agreement

Niklas Hoehne et al.

Summary: National net zero emission targets, if fully implemented, could significantly lower global greenhouse gas emissions and bring the Paris Agreement temperature goal within reach. However, current emissions reduction pledges are insufficient to meet the targets set by the Paris Agreement. The wave of net zero targets being discussed and adopted by countries could potentially make the Paris goal possible.

A framework for complex climate change risk assessment

Nicholas P. Simpson et al.

Summary: Real-world experience highlights the complexity of interactions among multiple drivers of climate change risk and the compounding or cascading effects of multiple risks. The article presents a framework for assessing increasingly complex climate change risks by focusing on interactions among the multiple drivers of risk and multiple risks. An innovative aspect is recognizing that risks can arise from both potential impacts of climate change and responses to climate change.
