Engaging Students Using an Arts-Based Pedagogy: Teaching and Learning Sociological Theory through Film, Art, and Music

Linda Hunter et al.

Summary: This study explores the impact of incorporating an arts-based pedagogical approach in a second-year sociological theory course. Findings from survey data indicate that using arts-based pedagogy helps students to maintain interest, improve understanding and critical thinking, boost confidence in writing and application of theories, contextualize historical content, and enhance memory. A comparison with data from a previous survey in 2009 shows consistent positive responses to arts-based resources over time, suggesting that this pedagogy contributes to enduring positive student learning experiences.

Sentiment analysis on massive open online course evaluations: A text mining and deep learning approach

Aytug Onan

Summary: The study evaluated the predictive performance of conventional supervised learning methods, ensemble learning methods, and deep learning methods, as well as the efficiency of text representation and word-embedding schemes in sentiment analysis on MOOC evaluations. Analysis of a corpus containing 66,000 MOOC reviews indicated that deep learning-based architectures outperformed other methods for sentiment analysis on educational data mining. The highest predictive performance was achieved by long short-term memory networks combined with GloVe word-embedding scheme-based representation, with a classification accuracy of 95.80%.

Maryam Kazemitabar et al.

Summary: The study translated and investigated the Persian version of the Questionnaire on Smoking Urges (QSU) with 12 items, finding that a modified 2-factor model was the best fitting model for the Iranian population. The Persian version of the QSU 12-item showed satisfactory psychometric properties, indicating it can be considered a reliable and valid method to estimate smoking urges in Iran. The QSU 12-item seems appropriate to measure urge for smoking among individuals with different sociodemographic backgrounds.
