Translating a Theory of Active Learning: An Attempt to Close the Research-Practice Gap in Education

Michelene T. H. Chi

Summary: Despite decades of research on teaching and learning, findings have had limited impact on classroom practices. This paper discusses methods to bridge the research-practice gap, focusing on translating robust laboratory findings and a theory of how students learn. A multi-step empirical translation research framework is proposed to address this issue.

Learning Analytics to Reveal Links Between Learning Design and Self-Regulated Learning

Yizhou Fan et al.

Summary: The importance of learning design in education is widely recognized, with learners needing strong self-regulated learning skills to effectively utilize opportunities in learning design. This study proposes a novel learning analytic method that combines three data analytic techniques to explore the link between learning design and learning tactics. Through analysis of a dataset from a MOOC on teaching in flipped classrooms, four learning tactics were identified, showing different priorities among learners from different performance groups. High-performance learners demonstrated strong alignment of learning tactics with tasks in the learning design.

A conceptual framework and a professional development model for supporting teachers' triple SRL-SRT processes and promoting students' academic outcomes

Bracha Kramarski et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a conceptual framework and a practical model for addressing teachers' difficulties in implementing effective self-regulated learning (SRL), focusing on teachers' own self-regulated learning, self-regulated teaching, and activating students' self-regulated learning. The model aims to support teachers in improving their teaching practices and enhancing students' learning outcomes through self-regulation.

Predicting Co-occurring Emotions from Eye-Tracking and Interaction Data in MetaTutor

Sebastien Lalle et al.

Summary: This paper explores the co-occurrence of emotions in the educational context, especially boredom+frustration and curiosity+anxiety, using MetaTutor ITS as a test-bed. The study demonstrates that these emotions can be predicted from data better than baseline using eye-tracking and interaction data, suggesting a promising direction for developing affect-aware ITS.

How are students' emotions related to the accuracy of cognitive and metacognitive processes during learning with an intelligent tutoring system?

Michelle Taub et al.

Summary: This study investigated 65 students' emotions scores while learning about the circulatory system with MetaTutor. The results showed a negative correlation between surprise emotion and accuracy of metacognitive judgement, and a positive correlation between frustration emotion and accuracy of note-taking. These findings highlight the beneficial role of negative emotions in learning and the importance of providing feedback on emotion regulation in order to ensure effective learning experiences with advanced learning technologies.
