Metal-Organic Framework Composites for Theragnostics and Drug Delivery Applications

Johannes W. M. Osterrieth et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials for cancer drug delivery due to their high drug uptake capacities and slow-release mechanisms. MOF-composite materials with added functionality, such as externally triggered drug release and improved pharmacokinetics, show potential for applications in nanomedicine. Further research is needed to develop biomedical expertise and advanced targeting techniques in this field.

Missing-Linker-Assisted Artesunate Delivery by Metal-Organic Frameworks for Synergistic Cancer Treatment

Dongdong Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents the development of an ATS nanomedicine through self-assembly with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), utilizing defects in MOFs caused by missing linkers to enhance the biological stability and tumor accumulation of ATS. In the presence of intracellular HCO3-, Mn2+ acts as a catalyst to promote the bicarbonate-activated H2O2 system, oxidizing ATS to generate reactive oxygen species and inducing oxidative death in cancer cells.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

A continuous flow chemistry approach for the ultrafast and low-cost synthesis of MOF-808

Sujay Bagi et al.

Summary: The continuous manufacturing process using flow-through reactors for MOF-808 synthesis significantly increases process yields and decreases solvent use compared to batch processes. Optimal conditions resulted in substantially reduced amounts of solvent and modulator, leading to a significant increase in productivity. Laboratory-scale process engineering assessment showed that solvent use was the major contributor to overall cost, supporting the potential cost and energy savings of flow synthesis routes.
