Bright, noniridescent structural coloration from clay mineral nanosheet suspensions

Paulo H. Michels-Brito et al.

Summary: By using suspended two-dimensional nanosheets of a clay mineral, researchers have achieved bright and non-iridescent structural colors. The brightness is improved by using double clay nanosheets, optimizing the clay refractive index that otherwise hampers structural coloration. The distance between layers and the structural colors can be controlled precisely and reproducibly by clay concentration and ionic strength, and obtaining non-iridescence is easily accomplished in this system.

Structural Conversion of Cu-Titanate into Photoactive Plasmonic Cu-TiO2for H2Generation in Visible Light

Mohamed Esmat et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the photocatalytic hydrogen production from ammonia-borane using CuO-loaded TiO2 nanosheets under visible light. The results show that CuO nanoparticles are converted to metallic Cu nanoparticles during the photocatalytic reaction, and they photocatalyze the reaction through their in situ-formed plasmonic features. The potential role of plasmonic Cu nanoparticles in promoting charge separation and enhancing photocatalytic performance is also studied.

In situ Blue titania via band shape engineering for exceptional solar H2 production in rutile TiO2

Esmail Doustkhah et al.

Summary: This study presents a solar-driven photocatalyst based on Cl-doped rutile TiO2, which improves photocatalytic activity by engineering the band shape of TiO2. The research demonstrates that band shape engineering offers a more facile and robust solution for photocatalysis, compared to previous efforts directed towards narrowing TiO2's band gap.

Ni-Doped Protonated Layered Titanate/TiO2 Composite with Efficient Photocatalytic Activity for NOx Decomposition Reactions

Kanji Saito et al.

Summary: A Ni-doped protonated layered titanate/TiO2 composite with high photocatalytic activity for NOx decomposition reactions was synthesized by solid-state reactions and subsequent treatment with dilute HCl and drying at low temperatures. The optimized Ni content in the composite was obtained at a lower temperature, leading to improved photocatalytic performance.

Enhancing the Catalytic Activity of Palladium Nanoparticles via Sandwich-Like Confinement by Thin Titanate Nanosheets

Kevin Ament et al.

Summary: In this study, researchers aimed to mimic the effect of atomically thin oxide layers on the electronic structure and catalytic activity of metals at a bulk scale by intercalating Pd nanoparticles into a nematic liquid crystalline phase. The resulting mesoporous architecture showed good accessibility to the Pd nanoparticles, leading to high catalytic activity in the oxidation of CO. The electron interaction between nanoparticles and nanosheets was observed, indicating a unique metal-support interaction that contributed to the catalyst's performance.

Nitrogen doping-mediated oxygen vacancies enhancing co-catalyst-free solar photocatalytic H2 production activity in anatase TiO2 nanosheet assembly

Mohamed Esmat et al.

Summary: Introducing oxygen vacancies (Vo) into TiO2 photocatalyst along with N doping is proposed as an alternative strategy for achieving efficient co-catalyst-free solar photocatalytic activity under less extreme conditions. The synthesized material exhibits good co-catalyst-free solar photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution via water splitting under irradiation with simulated solar light, showing higher efficiency compared to typical co-catalyst-free defective TiO2 materials. The introduced Vo is believed to play a role in facilitating charge separation and improving photocatalytic efficiency.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly Synthesis of Three-Dimensional Mesoporous Lepidocrocite-Type Layered Sodium Titanate as a Superior Adsorbent for Selective Removal of Cationic Dyes via an Ion-Exchange Mechanism

Linfeng Xu et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional mesoporous lepidocrocite-type layered sodium titanate (LST) was constructed through electrostatic interaction at room temperature, exhibiting superior adsorption properties for cationic dyes. An ion-exchange mechanism was proposed for cationic dye adsorption on LST, suggesting stoichiometric exchange between Na+ ions in the LST interlayer and dye molecules in solution.

Electrically Induced Alignment of Semiconductor Nanosheets in Niobate-Clay Binary Nanosheet Colloids toward Significantly Enhanced Photocatalysis

Teruyuki Nakato et al.

Summary: Aqueous binary colloids of niobate and clay nanosheets exhibit unique photocatalytic properties, with improved performance achieved through the use of an external electric field to align the nanosheets. The structure of the colloids plays a key role in their photocatalytic activity, with the fastest decomposition observed in electrically aligned colloids without domain growth.
