Evaluation of GRACE derived groundwater storage changes in different agro-ecological zones of the Indus Basin

Fazlullah Akhtar et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of GRACE in two different agroecological zones of the Indus Basin, showing a poor correlation between GRACE-derived GWSA and in-situ measurements, primarily influenced by the geomorphology and limited observation wells. Additionally, the study found a decreasing trend in groundwater abstraction over 15 years in both the LBDC and KRB regions.

Performance Evaluation and Water Availability of Canal Irrigation Scheme in Punjab Pakistan

Imran Sajid et al.

Summary: Century-old infrastructure causes substantial water loss and triggers groundwater abstractions, leading to low irrigation efficiency. The study suggests prioritizing improvements to field water application rather than canals with better water quality, and storing surplus water from the Mungi canal for later use in November and December.

Estimate Cotton Water Consumption from Shallow Groundwater under Different Irrigation Schedules

Guohua Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a model based on the Richards equation was developed to simultaneously estimate crop water consumption of shallow groundwater and determine the optimal irrigation schedule. The interaction between meteorological factors and the surface soil water content was considered to provide a better estimation of crop water consumption. Among two irrigation scheduling methods, Method A, which is based on soil water content, was found to be more rational as it could utilize more groundwater effectively.

Simulating Cotton Growth and Productivity Using AquaCrop Model under Deficit Irrigation in a Semi-Arid Climate

Marjan Aziz et al.

Summary: AquaCrop is a water-driven model that accurately predicts cotton productivity under different irrigation scenarios. The model's predictions showed good performance in non-stressed and moderate stressed conditions. The treatment with 80%ET consumed 20% less water than the treatment with 100%ET and achieved high water productivity.

Agricultural Innovation: A comparative analysis of economic benefits gained by farmers under climate resilient and conventional agricultural practices

Ihsan Jamil et al.

Summary: Cotton producers in Pakistan are facing challenges such as climate change, traditional agricultural practices, and depletion of land resources, but adopting sustainable land and water management practices of climate resilient agriculture can significantly improve cotton production efficiency and sustainability. The economic benefits of adopting climate resilient agriculture practices are higher compared to traditional methods, showing that these practices are economically, financially, and environmentally advantageous.

Impacts of different irrigation water levels on the yield, water use efficiency, and fiber quality properties of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) irrigated by drip systems

Ersel Yilmaz et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of different water deficits on cotton yield, water use efficiency, and fiber quality in Turkey's semiarid region from 2017 to 2018. Full irrigation led to the highest cotton yield, while a 75% irrigation regime showed benefits in terms of water-saving and high water use efficiency.

Evaluating socio-economic and environmental factors influencing farm-level water scarcity in Punjab, Pakistan

Muhammad Awais Ali Khan et al.

Summary: This paper evaluates the water challenges faced by Pakistan's economy, particularly in the Punjab region, and identifies eight factors directly impacting farmer well-being. Statistical analysis using the Kruskal-Wallis test shows significant differences in demographic attributes and the identified factors, highlighting the importance of education and age in the adoption of efficient irrigation systems. The research underscores the need to introduce crops with lower water demand and support agricultural extension services to enhance crop productivity and on-farm water conservation.

Determinants of reactive adaptations to climate change in semi-arid region of Pakistan

Rabia Shahid et al.

Summary: This study addresses the gap in research on adoption of adaptation strategies towards changing climate by farmers in semi-arid region of Pakistan. Survey data from 200 rice growers was analyzed to identify adaptation strategies such as increased irrigation, on-farm storage, fertilizer changes, weather forecasting and soil conservation techniques. The study also revealed the significant impact of socioeconomic factors on the adoption of these adaptation strategies.

Perceptions on the use of recycled water for produce irrigation and household tasks: A comparison between Israeli and Palestinian consumers

Hillary A. Craddock et al.

Summary: Water scarcity has led to extensive wastewater recycling for agricultural irrigation in Israel and the Palestinian Territories. A survey conducted in 2018 among Israeli and Palestinian populations revealed differences in willingness to use recycled water, with Israelis showing higher acceptance for various purposes and Palestinians more inclined towards high-contact uses like drinking and cooking. Understanding these differences is crucial for effective water recycling outreach and communication strategies in the face of increasing water stress in both regions.

A critique of successful elements of existing on-farm irrigation water management initiatives in Pakistan

Faizan ul Hasan et al.

Summary: This review paper discusses the institutional arrangements and successful elements of irrigated agriculture in Pakistan, highlighting challenges such as low profitability of farming business and declining share of agriculture sector in GDP. Despite efforts to enhance water availability and promote resource conservation technologies, farming remains unprofitable for many farmers. A new governance model is needed to bridge the gap between on-farm water management and irrigation departments in order to make agriculture a profitable business.
