Multidimensional nanoscopic chiroptics

Yang Chen et al.

Summary: Nanoscopic chiroptics studies spin-dependent asymmetric light-matter interactions at the nanoscale, with asymmetry stemming from intrinsic properties of materials, structures, or light. With the advent of low-dimensional materials platforms, nanoscopic chiroptics has expanded from far field to near field, and across spatial, momentum, and integrated spatial-momentum dimensions, revealing new physical mechanisms and applications related to chiral effects.

Nanophotonic Approaches for Chirality Sensing

Lauren A. Warning et al.

Summary: Chiral nanophotonic materials are promising for biosensing applications due to their ability to focus light into nanometer dimensions, increasing sensitivity. Recent advances in nanomaterial-enhanced chirality sensing have achieved detection limits as low as attomolar concentrations, showing potential for pharmaceutical, forensic, and medical applications requiring high sensitivity. The review covers the development and application of chiral nanomaterials for detecting biomolecules, supramolecular structures, and environmental stimuli, as well as discussing future prospects for nanophotonic chiral systems.

Observation of Giant Extrinsic Chirality Empowered by Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum

Jiaju Wu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates giant extrinsic chirality in achiral metasurfaces by breaking the mirror symmetry of the system. The transmittance of two different polarization states and the signs of circular dichroism can be controlled by tilting the metasurface plane. Additionally, an application of polarization-multiplexed-field image display assisted by chiral quasi-BICs is shown.

Enhanced spin Hall effect due to the redshift gaps of photonic hypercrystals

Jiaoqiao Xia et al.

Summary: The method proposed enhances the spin Hall effect of light in the photonic hypercrystal by utilizing redshift gaps and optimizing the structure and incident angle, allowing for a maximum transverse shift close to 15 μm. This enhancement provides opportunities for expanding applications in the field of optics.

Femtomolar Biodetection by a Compact Core-Shell 3D Chiral Metamaterial

Mariachiara Manoccio et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the sensing capabilities of a chip-based metamaterial, combining 3D chiral geometry with a functional core-shell nanoarchitecture. The modified optical response of the chiral metamaterial allows for analysis in complex environments and efficient interaction with biomolecules, leading to high sensitivity detection of biomarkers. Measurements in spiked solution and human serum show the potential for early diagnostics and diseases progression monitoring in a range not accessible with common immunological assays, opening new perspectives for next-generation biomedical systems.

Broadband wide-angle multilayer absorber based on a broadband omnidirectional optical Tamm state

Feng Wu et al.

Summary: A broadband omnidirectional optical Tamm state (OTS) has been achieved by utilizing a heterostructure composed of a chromium layer and a one-dimensional photonic crystal containing hyperbolic metamaterials, enabling broadband wide-angle absorption from 1612 nm to 2335 nm and incident angles from 0 degrees to 70 degrees with an absorption bandwidth of 723 nm. This lithography-free structure can be easily fabricated using current deposition techniques and has potential applications in various devices.

Resonant reflection by microsphere arrays with AR-quenched Mie scattering

Nasrin Razmjooei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the differentiation between Mie resonance and guided-mode resonance in mediating resonant reflection in periodic particle assemblies, revealing high-efficiency resonance reflection in Mie-resonance-quenched arrays. By applying an optimal antireflection coating to silicon spheres in a 2D periodic array, the study demonstrates persistent perfect reflection and greatly diminished Mie scattering efficiency. The results provide insights into the operational physics and dispel misconceptions in the literature.
