Transcriptomic analysis and transgenerational effects of ZnO nanoparticles on Daphnia magna: Endocrine-disrupting potential and energy metabolism

Qianju Qi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the chronic toxicity and intergenerational effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) on the freshwater invertebrate Daphnia magna through transcriptomic analysis. The exposure of parent daphnia to ZnO NPs resulted in inhibited reproduction and growth, accompanied by downregulation of genes involved in lysosomal and phagosome, energy metabolism, and endocrine disruption pathways. Partial recovery of growth and reproductive inhibition was observed in subsequent generations, suggesting limited transgenerational effects.

Food abundance mediates the harmful effects of ZnO nanoparticles on development and early reproductive performance of Daphnia magna

Yunfei Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the combined effects of food abundance and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles concentration on the development and reproductive performance of Daphnia magna. The results showed that high levels of ZnO nanoparticles and low abundance of algae had a negative effect on the life history of D. magna. Higher abundance of algae reduced the negative effect of ZnO nanoparticles, but the negative effect could not be eliminated. The findings highlight the importance of considering food abundance when evaluating the impact of pollutants on zooplankton.

Size-specific sensitivity of cladocerans to freshwater salinization: Evidences from the changes in life history and population dynamics

Jing Huang et al.

Summary: The salinization of freshwater systems is a common problem caused by human activities and climate change. It threatens freshwater biodiversity and resources, particularly affecting cladocerans at individual and population levels. Different-sized cladocerans have different sensitivities to salinization, with smaller species being more sensitive. Freshwater salinization may lead to the replacement of smaller, salt-intolerant cladocerans with larger, salt-tolerant ones, significantly impacting freshwater communities and ecosystems. Population levels of cladocerans are more susceptible to salinity stress than individual levels.

Multigenerational Toxic Effects on Daphnia magna Induced by Silver Nanoparticles and Glyphosate Mixture

Marlon Luiz Neves da Silva et al.

Summary: The study identified multigenerational toxicological effects of a binary mixture of silver nanoparticles and glyphosate on Daphnia magna, affecting the survival, growth, reproduction, and age at first brood of the descendants. The mixture showed higher toxicity than individual compounds, sparking further research into the interaction of binary mixtures with organisms.

Lethal effects and ultrastructure of cellular uptake of ingested gold nanoparticles in the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus (Monogononta: Brachionidae)

Julia R. Geppert et al.

Summary: Recent literature has largely focused on marine organisms when discussing the threat posed by anthropogenic microscopic pollution, with less attention given to freshwater environments which face similar risks. This study provides concrete evidence for the cellular uptake of nanoparticles (NPs) in rotifers, with findings suggesting that the ingestion of NPs can have lethal effects on these organisms. The research highlights the potential threat that microscopic pollution poses to freshwater organisms, emphasizing the importance of directing more attention towards freshwater environments in understanding and mitigating the impacts of pollution on aquatic ecosystems.

Evaluation of silver nanowires (AgNWs) toxicity on reproductive success of Daphnia magna over two generations and their teratogenic effect on embryonic development

Hye Seon Park et al.

Summary: This study found that silver nanowires were harmful to the reproductive health of Daphnia magna, leading to impaired reproductive performances and increased occurrence of congenital anomalies. Exposure to AgNWs also caused different effects in two consecutive generations.
