Development and Assessment of a High-Resolution Biogenic Emission Inventory from Urban Green Spaces in China

Mingchen Ma et al.

Summary: BVOC emissions from urban green spaces, known as U-BVOC emissions, have been largely ignored due to low-resolution land cover data. With a new high-resolution dataset, it is now possible to evaluate their significant role in urban environments, especially in megacities. The newly constructed U-BVOC emission inventory provides an improved dataset for studying the modulation of BVOCs on ozone, SOA, and atmospheric chemistry in urban areas.

A modeling study of the impact of stratospheric intrusion on ozone enhancement in the lower troposphere over the Hong Kong regions, China

Kaihui Zhao et al.

Summary: Stratospheric intrusion plays a crucial role in transporting ozone-rich air from the stratosphere to the lower troposphere. The study utilized the WRFChem model to simulate a stratospheric intrusion event and found that high-level jet streams were key factors in the intrusion process. The results showed a significant enhancement of ozone in the lower troposphere, with both horizontal and vertical transport playing important roles in this enhancement.

Revealing the modulation of boundary conditions and governing processes on ozone formation over northern China in June 2017

Feifan Yan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of different boundary conditions on the vertical distribution of ozone over urban Beijing. The global chemical transport model provided more reasonable performance compared to clean and static boundary conditions. Dynamic emission control strategies were proposed to reduce ozone concentration during pollution periods, showing significant efficacy when considering both accumulation and transport effects.

The Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model versions 5.3 and 5.3.1: system updates and evaluation

K. Wyat Appel et al.

Summary: The CMAQ model version 5.3, released in August 2019, features significant updates in science, functionality, and computation efficiency compared to version 5.2.1. Major advances in the new model include enhanced aerosol, chlorine, bromine, and iodine chemistry, as well as updated deposition models. In addition, support for the WRF model's hybrid vertical coordinate was added. Evaluations of CMAQ531 show differences in O-3 and PM2:5 values compared to CMAQ521.
