The Effect of Cholesterol on Membrane-Bound Islet Amyloid Polypeptide

Mikkel Christensen et al.

Summary: This study used atomistic, unbiased molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the effect of cholesterol on membrane bound IAPP. Results indicated that cholesterol decreased the insertion depth of IAPP compared to pure phospholipid membranes, while phosphatidylserine (PS) lipids counteracted the effect of cholesterol. The depletion of cholesterol in the vicinity of IAPP suggests that its effect is indirect.

Three-Phase Coexistence in Binary Charged Lipid Membranes in a Hypotonic Solution

Jingyu Guo et al.

Summary: The study found that even in binary lipid mixtures, DOPS and DPPC can form a three-phase coexistence due to the ionization of DOPS headgroups, making the system quasi-ternary. Through experiments and coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations, it was determined that the stability of the three-phase coexistence is due to attraction mediated by hydrogen bonding between protonated DOPS molecules and reduction of electrostatic interactions at the domain boundaries.
