Enhanced cross-flow filtration with flat-sheet ceramic membranes by titanium-based coagulation for membrane fouling control

Xiaoman Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the filtration performance of ceramic membrane enhanced by a new titanium-based coagulant and simulated the fouling process using mathematical models. The results showed that the ceramic membrane treated with the titanium-based coagulant achieved efficient removal of organic matter and high permeation flux.

Stimuli-responsive of magnetic metal-organic frameworks (MMOF): Synthesis, dispersion control, and its tunability into polymer matrix under the augmented-magnetic field for H2 separation and CO2 capturing applications

Saeed Ashtiani et al.

Summary: A single-crystal magnetic-responsive core-shell MOF was synthesized by grafting Fe3O4 nanoparticles onto UiO-66-NH2 and embedding them into gas separation mixed matrix membranes. The stimuli-responsive behavior of the MMOF was confirmed, and its dispersion in a well-defined arrays structure in the PMMA matrix was observed. The presence of a magnetic field prevented MMOF aggregation and sedimentation, resulting in improved gas permeability and selectivity compared to non-controlled samples.

Techno-economic characteristics of wastewater treatment plants retrofitted from the conventional activated sludge process to the membrane bioreactor process

Tingwei Gao et al.

Summary: This study compares the techno-economy of the conventional activated sludge (CAS) process and the membrane bioreactor (MBR) process by analyzing the operating data of 20 large-scale wastewater treatment plants. The results show that after retrofitting to MBR, pollutant removal efficiency increases and energy consumption also increases, but operating costs do not significantly increase. Additionally, the environmental benefit and net profit increase. Technological efficiency, particularly cost efficiency, improves after the retrofitting. The study emphasizes the importance of effluent standards in determining the techno-economic viability of different processes.

Bioinspired and biomimetic membranes for water purification and chemical separation: A review

Elham Abaie et al.

Summary: Bioinspired and biomimetic membranes have shown remarkable development over the past two decades, taking advantage of exceptional transport properties of biological channels. While commercialized membranes based on AQPs have been successful, large-scale, defect-free biomimetic membranes are still unavailable. The combination of bioinspired concepts, molecular engineering, and collaboration with the polymer industry may lead to scalable polymeric membranes with intrinsic selective channels.

Fertilizer drawn forward osmosis as an alternative to 2nd pass seawater reverse osmosis: Estimation of boron removal and energy consumption

Hailan Wang et al.

Summary: This study examined the feasibility of using FDFO as an alternative to 2nd pass RO for sustainable irrigation, considering boron removal performance and specific energy consumption. Results showed that low boron concentration in FS and high DS pH reduced boron solute flux and led to lower boron concentration in DS. Other operating conditions had negligible impact on final DS boron concentration.
