Advancement in Salmonella Detection Methods: From Conventional to Electrochemical-Based Sensing Detection

Mohd Syafiq Awang et al.

Summary: Large-scale food-borne outbreaks caused by Salmonella are rare nowadays thanks to advanced medical systems, but localized outbreaks still pose a threat to public health. Various detection methods, such as immunological, molecular, mass spectrometry, spectroscopy, optical phenotyping, and biosensors, are available for Salmonella detection. Electrochemical biosensors, especially those utilizing aptamers and nanomaterials, are gaining interest due to sensitivity, speed, and portability.

An integrated electro-optical biosensor system for rapid, low-cost detection of bacteria

Daniel Petrovszki et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the development of a cost-effective electro-optical biosensor for rapid detection of bacteria in clinical diagnostics. By utilizing label-free optical detection, the system demonstrated a detection limit of approximately 102CFU x mL(-1), providing a quick and affordable alternative for identifying pathogens in body fluids. The research aims to implement this cell-gathering method in other highly sensitive integrated optical sensor constructions, which could potentially revolutionize point-of-care diagnostics.

Novel Micro-Nano Optoelectronic Biosensor for Label-Free Real-Time Biofilm Monitoring

Giuseppe Brunetti et al.

Summary: In the following decades, AMR is expected to become one of the leading causes of death worldwide. Overuse of antibiotics has led to their ineffectiveness, particularly in the presence of bacterial biofilms. A novel optoelectronic device based on optical and electrical measurements has been designed for monitoring the evolution of bacterial biofilms.

Rapid Detection of Salmonella typhimurium in Drinking Water by a White Light Reflectance Spectroscopy Immunosensor

Michailia Angelopoulou et al.

Summary: This study presented an optical biosensor based on white light reflectance spectroscopy for detecting Salmonella typhimurium lipopolysaccharide and bacteria in drinking water. The sensor chip, with a simple structure, employed a competitive immunoassay configuration for rapid detection of extremely low concentrations of Salmonella LPS and bacteria. With short analysis time and small size, this immunosensor could have broad applications in bacteria detection in drinking water.

Advances in electrochemical aptasensors and immunosensors for detection of bacterial pathogens in food

Veronika Subjakova et al.

Summary: Bacterial pathogens, a major contaminant in food and drinking water, require fast and sensitive detection methods. While conventional detection methods are laborious, biosensors, especially immuno- and aptamer-based electrochemical sensors, offer a promising alternative. The review analyzes current trends in developing immuno- and aptasensors for various foodborne pathogens, presenting sensitivity, regeneration capability, and application potential in food and water samples.

Rapid detection of mozzarella and feta cheese adulteration with cow milk through a silicon photonic immunosensor

Michailia Angelopoulou et al.

Summary: This study utilized a silicon-based photonic immunosensor for the first time to detect adulteration of mozzarella and feta cheeses with bovine milk. The competitive immunoassay method significantly reduced non-specific signals from cheese matrix, enabling quick and accurate detection of bovine milk adulteration at concentrations as low as 0.5%. The reproducible assays with a wide linear dynamic range demonstrated the potential of the proposed immunosensor as a new tool against fraudulent activities in the dairy industry.
