New contrast agents for photoacoustic imaging and theranostics: Recent 5-year overview on phthalocyanine/naphthalocyanine-based nanoparticles

Eun-Yeong Park et al.

Summary: Phthalocyanine (Pc) and naphthalocyanine (Nc) nanoagents have attracted much attention as contrast agents for photoacoustic (PA) imaging due to their large extinction coefficients and long absorption wavelengths in the near-infrared region. Various strategies have been adopted to enhance Pc/Ncs' photophysical properties and address their poor solubility in an aqueous solution, including metal chelation, structure modification, and peripheral substitution. Recent advances on Pc/Nc-based PA agents and their extended applications in multiplexed biomedical imaging, multimodal diagnostic imaging, and image-guided phototherapy are highlighted in this review.

Simultaneous Dual-Modal Multispectral Photoacoustic and Ultrasound Macroscopy for Three-Dimensional Whole-Body Imaging of Small Animals

Eun-Yeong Park et al.

Summary: Photoacoustic imaging is a promising medical imaging technique that provides excellent functional imaging, though it is limited in offering structural information compared to other imaging modalities. Therefore, it is typically integrated with ultrasound imaging to provide complete morphological details of biological tissues. While this dual-modal imaging technique is already implemented on commercial clinical ultrasound imaging platforms, commercial platforms suffer from limited elevation resolution.

Gold Nanorod-Melanin Hybrids for Enhanced and Prolonged Photoacoustic Imaging in the Near-Infrared-II Window

Wonjun Yim et al.

Summary: This study presents monodisperse GNR-melanin nanohybrids with a tunable polydopamine (PDA) coating that significantly enhances the photoacoustic (PA) signal compared to pristine GNRs. The PA signal of GNR@PDAs only decreased by 29% during 5 minutes of laser illumination in the NIR-II window, while significant attenuation (77%) was observed for GNRs. The PDA-coating provides a rational design for robust PA imaging probes and offers opportunities for other photomediated biomedicines.
