Sulfonamide functional head on short-chain perfluorinated substance drives developmental toxicity

Yvonne Rericha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the developmental toxicity of short-chain PFAS using embryonic zebrafish model. The results showed that these chemicals had adverse effects on the morphology and behavior of the larvae. Only FBSA induced abnormal morphology and significantly disrupted normal gene expression. Furthermore, the study found differences in tissue concentrations of these chemicals, with FBSA having the highest concentration.

Comparative Toxicity of Aquatic Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Exposure in Three Species of Amphibians

R. Wesley Flynn et al.

Summary: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are contaminants that can negatively affect the health and development of amphibians. The sensitivity to PFAS varies among species, with longer developmental species being more susceptible. In areas with high levels of PFAS contamination, certain species may experience sublethal effects.

Application of a Framework for Grouping and Mixtures Toxicity Assessment of PFAS: A Closer Examination of Dose-Additivity Approaches

Philip E. Goodrum et al.

Summary: This article presents a new and systematic analysis of available PFAS toxicity study data, finding that concentration addition and relative potency factor methods are inappropriate, and that the dose-response curves for long-chain perfluoroalkyl sulfonic acids differ significantly from short-chain PFSAs and perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct a screening level risk assessment by grouping perfluoroalkyl carboxylic acids and PFSAs separately based on the current state of the science.

Sensitivity and Accumulation of Perfluorooctanesulfonate and Perfluorohexanesulfonic Acid in Fathead Minnows (Pimephales promelas) Exposed over Critical Life Stages of Reproduction and Development

J. G. Suski et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of PFOS and PFHxS on fathead minnows and found that PFOS had negative impacts on juvenile fish growth, while PFHxS did not exhibit toxicity on adult or juvenile fish at concentrations up to 1200 μg/L.
