Copper bioavailability, uptake, toxicity and tolerance in plants: A comprehensive review

Vinod Kumar et al.

Summary: Copper is an essential element for humans and plants, but excessive intake may have detrimental effects on living systems. Monitoring the bioavailability and exposure levels of copper is crucial for prevention of toxicity, especially focusing on the behavior of copper in the soil-plant system.

Ecotoxicity of copper input and accumulation for soil biodiversity in vineyards

Battle Karimi et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted on the ecotoxicity of copper, which found that microbial activity decreased by 30% when more than 400 kg of copper was applied yearly per hectare. Nematodes abundance remained unchanged for copper application up to 3200 kg/ha/year. The reproduction of collembola and enchytraeid declined by 50% after application of 400 and 1895 kg Cu/ha/year, respectively, while earthworm biomass was reduced by 15% after application of 200 kgCu/ha/year.

Use of Chitosan and Other Natural Compounds Alone or in Different Strategies with Copper Hydroxide for Control of Grapevine Downy Mildew

Gianfranco Romanazzi et al.

Summary: In this study, the 0.5%/0.8% chitosan formulation proved to be the most effective against grapevine downy mildew (GDM), while combining it with copper hydroxide helped reduce disease incidence. Chitosan serves as a promising alternative for the control of GDM in both organic and integrated disease management systems.

Copper Content and Export in European Vineyard Soils Influenced by Climate and Soil Properties

Boris Droz et al.

Summary: The study identified precipitation, aridity, and soil organic carbon as key variables explaining 45% of Cu-t distribution in EU vineyards, highlighting the significant impact of climate and soil properties on copper distribution in vineyards. The average net export of Cu at the EU scale is 0.29 kg Cu ha(-1), significantly lower than the net accumulation of Cu (24.8 kg Cu ha(-1). The study also suggests that specific remediation measures and strategies for Cu-f use are needed to manage the trade-off between pest control and soil and water contamination in vineyard areas.
