Recent advances in marine algae oligosaccharides: structure, analysis, and potential prebiotic activities

Xu-Ting Xie et al.

Summary: Marine algae oligosaccharides (MAOs) are degradation products of marine algae polysaccharides (MAPs) and have prebiotic effects that promote health by enhancing the activity of beneficial bacteria and producing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). While the exact structures and prebiotic activities of MAOs are still largely unexplored, they play an important role in gut microbiota.

Bioactive polysaccharides from red seaweed as potent food supplements: a systematic review of their extraction, purification, and biological activities

Si-Min Qiu et al.

Summary: Most marine macroalgae have bioactive compounds, red seaweeds in particular are rich sources of bioactive polysaccharides with various physiological and biological activities. However, the lack of comprehensive information and human clinical trials on red seaweed polysaccharides limits their industrial-scale utilization in functional foods. This review summarizes recent information on the extraction, purification, biological activities, and molecular principles of red seaweed polysaccharides, providing a basis for further research on their structure, mechanisms, and applications in functional foods.

Dynamic variations in physicochemical characteristics of oolong tea polysaccharides during simulated digestion and fecal fermentation in vitro

Ding-Tao Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dynamic variations in physicochemical characteristics of 'Wuyi rock' tea polysaccharides during simulated digestion and fecal fermentation in vitro. The results showed that the digestibility of WYP after simulated digestion was about 8.38%, while the fermentability of indigestible WYP after fecal fermentation was about 42.18%. Further analysis revealed that the indigestible WYP could modulate the microbial composition and enhance the production of short-chain fatty acids. These findings suggest that WYP has the potential to improve intestinal health.

Marine oligosaccharides originated from seaweeds: Source, preparation, structure, physiological activity and applications

Benwei Zhu et al.

Summary: Marine polysaccharides from seaweeds, such as agar, alginate, carrageenan, and fucoidan, have various physiological activities but are limited by poor solubility and low bioavailability. Marine oligosaccharides, as degradation products of polysaccharides, have gained attention for their strong biological activities, good solubility, and high bioavailability. The relationship between the structure and physiological activity of marine oligosaccharides is emphasized, with potential applications in food biotechnology and agriculture.

Molecular characteristics and antioxidant activity of laminarin extracted from the seaweed species Laminaria hyperborea, using hydrothermal-assisted extraction and a multi-step purification procedure

Gaurav Rajauria et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effect of hydrothermal-assisted extraction and a multi-step purification process on the molecular characteristics and antioxidant activity of laminarin extracts from brown seaweed. The optimized extraction conditions were found to be effective in recovering biologically active laminarin, while the purification process reduced the antioxidant activity compared to crude extract.
