A practical approach to the genomics of kidney disorders

Eleanor Hay et al.

Summary: The rapid technological advances in genomic testing are enhancing our understanding of the genetic basis of kidney disorders, but the challenges of interpreting uncertain variants and incidental findings remain. Choosing the most appropriate testing modality requires a comprehensive understanding of the technologies available and the genetic architecture and heterogeneity of kidney disease. The clinical utility of obtaining a molecular diagnosis and the future of this dynamic field are also important considerations for healthcare providers and researchers.

Genetic testing in the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease: recommendations for clinical practice

Nine Knoers et al.

Summary: Massively parallel sequencing-based genetic testing shows high diagnostic yield in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), but faces barriers in routine clinical practice. This article aims to support nephrologists in overcoming these barriers and provides important factors in genetic testing for nephrology.

Genetic Etiologies for Chronic Kidney Disease Revealed through Next-Generation Renal Gene Panel

Anthony J. Bleyer et al.

Summary: The use of broad panel genetic testing by clinical nephrologists had a high success rate, similar to results obtained by academic centers specializing in genetics. Positive genetic findings were identified in 21.1% of cases, with the most common gene variants being PKD1, COL4A5, PKD2, COL4A4, COL4A3, and TTR.

Clinical Integration of Genome Diagnostics for Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract

Rik Westland et al.

Summary: Revolution in genetics, epigenetics, and bioinformatics is changing diagnostics and clinical medicine. CAKUT is a major cause of kidney failure in children and young adults, but its phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity has hindered standardization of clinical decisions. Precision medicine offers integrated diagnostics, genetic counseling, and personalized management for CAKUT patients.

Summary: In a cohort of patients with suspected monogenic kidney disease in Australia, exome sequencing (ES) had a high diagnostic yield and clinical impact. The study identified predictors of positive diagnosis and highlighted the potential benefits of using ES in guiding clinical practice and health service design.

Genetic Testing in Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Juliann M. Savatt et al.

Summary: The article discusses the importance and efficiency of genetic testing in patients with neurodevelopmental disorders, and suggests that genetic testing should be offered to all patients with specific symptoms. However, data show that only a minority of children with autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability have undergone genetic testing.
