Spectral amplitude modulation and dynamic near-field displaying of all-silicon terahertz metasurfaces supporting bound states in the continuum

Jitao Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the theoretical and experimental realization of high-thickness all-silicon terahertz metasurfaces supporting BIC and quasi-BIC with simple pairs of elliptical pillars. The extra optical pump was utilized to modulate the transmission amplitude difference between BIC and quasi-BIC metasurfaces, achieving active control from On state to Off state. The polarization-dependent THz near-field displaying application was developed using metasurfaces with abundant amplitude gradation, allowing for the dynamic control of grayscale characteristics of a photograph from On state to Off state.

Compound plasmonic vortex generation based on spiral nanoslits

Chang-Da Zhou et al.

Summary: The concept of compound plasmonic vortex was proposed in this study, along with the design of structured plasmonic vortex generators using multiple spiral nanoslits. The topological charge of the plasmonic vortex varies in different regions, and theoretical analysis laid the foundation for the design of radially structured plasmonic vortex generators. The discussions about the interference of vortex fields definite the generation condition for the structured vortex.

Dynamic control of reflective chiral terahertz metasurface with a new application developing in full grayscale near field imaging

Jitao Li et al.

Summary: A reflective chiral THz metasurface design utilizing monolayer graphene on low resistance Si substrate for controlling chiral properties effectively. Dynamic control of THz reflection can induce state switch between 'On' and 'Off' for applications like vortex focusing and near field imaging. Development of full grayscale near field imaging application allows for displaying full grayscale details unlike traditional near field imaging.

Tunable terahertz Dirac semimetal metamaterials

Xiaoyong He et al.

Summary: The tunable propagation properties of 3D Dirac semimetal patterned metamaterial structures in the terahertz regime have been symmetrically investigated. The results show that resonant properties are highly sensitive to the thicknesses of DSM MMs and support strong LC and dipolar resonances. By increasing the Fermi level, resonant strength becomes stronger, and asymmetrical resonators can achieve a very sharp Fano resonant peak with a large Q-factor.

Deterministic Approach to Achieve Full-Polarization Cloak

He-Xiu Xu et al.

Summary: Our deterministic approach combines the required cloaking phase patterns for sigma+ and sigma- states to engineer a metasurface skin cloak that works under any polarization state. This method preserves the wavefront of light impinging on the cloak, enabling the design of proof-of-concept metasurface cloaks for a 3D triangle platform at microwave frequency. Results demonstrate the effectiveness of our cloaks in restoring the amplitude and phase of reflected beams under full polarization states, with a desirable bandwidth of around 17.9%, potentially concealing or deceiving arbitrary objects placed inside.

Designing nonlinear thermal devices and metamaterials under the Fourier law: A route to nonlinear thermotics

Gao-Le Dai

Summary: The article focuses on recent progress in nonlinear heat transfer, specifically in designing nonlinear thermal devices and metamaterials with temperature-dependent thermal conductivities under the Fourier law. It also discusses the tuning of nonlinearity through multi-physical effects and the calculation of effective properties of nonlinear conductive composites using the effective medium theory. These theoretical works have led to the successful design of various functional materials and devices, some of which have been realized in experiments, showing promise for the development of nonlinear thermotics.

Dual-band independent phase control based on high efficiency metasurface [Invited]

Jinxing Li et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a general method for achieving arbitrary dual-band independent phase control using a double-layered C-shape reflective meta-atom design. Two functional metasurfaces are proposed in the microwave region, one for beam steering in different directions and the other for achromatic beam steering at two distinct frequencies. The simulation and measurement results show good agreement with theoretical predictions, with high efficiency achieved at multiple frequencies for both metasurfaces.

Enhanced generation of nondegenerate photon pairs in nonlinear metasurfaces

Matthew Parry et al.

Summary: By utilizing the interplay of multiple bound states in the continuum resonances in nonlinear metasurfaces, a regime of nondegenerate photon-pair generation is theoretically predicted. This can significantly enhance the photon rate and spectral brightness compared to the degenerate regime, and the entanglement of the photon pairs can be tuned by varying the pump polarization for potential applications in ultracompact quantum light sources.
