Atrial fibrillation in the UK: predicting costs of an emerging epidemic recognizing and forecasting the cost drivers of atrial fibrillation-related costs

Paul Burdett et al.

Summary: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common sustained heart arrhythmia that imposes a significant cost on the NHS and the wider UK healthcare system. Hospitalizations are the main cost driver, and with an increasing number of AF patients, these costs are expected to rise in the future. By focusing on reducing hospitalizations, healthcare costs related to AF could be substantially reduced for the NHS.

Race, Body Mass Index, and the Risk of Atrial Fibrillation: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

Matthew J. Singleton et al.

Summary: The study found that obesity is associated with an increased risk of incident atrial fibrillation, with a J-shaped relationship between BMI and AF risk. However, this relationship varies by race/ethnicity, with Chinese-American participants having a more pronounced increased risk of AF with higher BMI, while Black participants have minimal increased risk. Further exploration of the differential effects of BMI by race/ethnicity on cardiovascular outcomes is needed.

Once-Weekly Semaglutide in Adults with Overweight or Obesity

John P. H. Wilding et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that for individuals with obesity, once-weekly use of 2.4 mg semaglutide in combination with lifestyle intervention can lead to sustained and clinically relevant weight loss, with significant improvements in cardiometabolic risk factors and physical functioning reported by participants.

Incidence of cardiovascular disease and mortality in underweight individuals

Hyuktae Kwon et al.

Summary: This study found a proportional relationship between the severity of underweight and the risk of stroke, MI, and all-cause mortality in the general population. Furthermore, this proportional association became more pronounced when waist circumference was additionally adjusted.

Joint Associations Between Body Mass Index and Waist Circumference With Atrial Fibrillation in Men and Women

Michiel H. F. Poorthuis et al.

Summary: This study found a positive association between BMI (above 20 kg/m2) and AF, as well as between WC and AF in both men and women. BMI seems to be a more informative measure about AF risk in women, while WC appears to be more informative in men.
