Cardiac remodeling in ambitious endurance-trained amateur athletes older than 50 years-an observational study

Daniel Dalos et al.

Summary: Conflicting data on cardiac remodeling in veteran athletes suggest that endurance training in individuals over 50 years old is not associated with chamber dilatation or left ventricular hypertrophy. A weekly training duration of at least 6 hours seems beneficial in preserving diastolic function and enhancing left atrial reservoir function.

Kinetics of Cardiac Remodeling and Fibrosis Biomarkers During an Extreme Mountain Ultramarathon

Caroline Le Goff et al.

Summary: This study investigated the kinetics of cardiac remodeling and fibrosis during and after an extreme mountain ultramarathon, and found a biphasic response of cardiac fibrosis biomarkers with a relative recovery in the second half of the event. Performing at such an extreme ultramarathon appears to be less deleterious for the heart than shorter events.

Mountain Ultra-Marathon (UTMB) Impact on Usual and Emerging Cardiac Biomarkers

Caroline Le Goff et al.

Summary: The impact of ultra-marathons on the cardiovascular system is contradictory, but this study found that blood concentrations of cardiac and inflammatory biomarkers significantly increased in participants immediately after the race, and some biomarkers remained elevated even after a 7-day recovery period.

Effects of medium- and long-distance running on cardiac damage markers in amateur runners: a systematic review, meta-analysis, and metaregression

Jacobo A. Rubio-Arias et al.

Summary: Endurance running races induce the release of cardiac damage markers, with age and body mass index affecting troponin I levels. Additionally, gender, mean speed, time to finish the race, and race type can also influence the levels of cardiac damage markers.

Cardiac structure and function in response to a multi-stagemarathon over 4486 km

Christopher Klenk et al.

Summary: The study investigated the changes in cardiac structure and function in ultra-endurance runners participating in the Trans Europe Foot Race 2009. It found that high exercise-induced cardiac volume load for >2 months led to a physiological structural adaptation without adverse cardiovascular remodelling.
