In Vitro Metabolism of Helenalin Acetate and 11α,13-Dihydrohelenalin Acetate: Natural Sesquiterpene Lactones from Arnica

Franziska M. Juergens et al.

Summary: Arnica tincture is a herbal medicinal preparation with anti-inflammatory activity that can be used for the treatment of blunt injuries and rheumatic muscle and joint complaints. Recent research has shown that it can cure cutaneous Leishmaniasis. In vitro metabolism experiments have provided a detailed understanding of the metabolism of Arnica tincture's main bioactive constituents, suggesting low levels of toxicity after dermal absorption.

Dermal Absorption of Sesquiterpene Lactones from Arnica Tincture

Franziska M. Juergens et al.

Summary: Arnica tincture is a traditional herbal medicine used for treating blunt injuries and is currently being investigated for its potential use in the treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis. This study provides detailed information on the dermal absorption of Arnica tincture, particularly its bioactive constituents called sesquiterpene lactones (STLs). The results show that within 48 hours, a majority of the STLs from Arnica tincture were absorbed into the skin, but a significant portion could not be extracted from the skin and were irreversibly bound to skin proteins. Additionally, fluorescence microscopic images revealed the accumulation of a fluorescent derivative of STLs in the epidermis.

Determinants of Unresponsiveness to Treatment in Cutaneous Leishmaniasis: A Focus on Anthroponotic Form Due to Leishmania tropica

Mehdi Bamorovat et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of implementing effective preventive and therapeutic measures for CL patients who do not respond to treatment, especially in endemic areas. Regular monitoring of drug unresponsiveness is essential for ACL patients, particularly in tropical regions where the disease is prevalent.
