Multiple Reaction Pathways for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction May Contribute to IrO2 (110)'s High Activity

Mai-Anh Ha et al.

Summary: Density functional theory calculations and statistical mechanical arguments were used to characterize multiple reaction pathways on the rutile IrO2 (110) facet, revealing alternative pathways to the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Detailed characterization of a co-adsorption pathway utilizing neighboring, adsorbed O, OH species was provided, along with the potential participation of surface Ir atoms in deprotonating an OOH* intermediate. These findings partially explain the high activity in iridium oxide catalysts and provide insight into mechanistic pathways available on metal oxide catalysts.
