Endophytic fungi: a tool for plant growth promotion and sustainable agriculture

Everlon Cid Rigobelo et al.

Summary: Endophytic fungi colonize plant tissues without causing disease symptoms, benefiting both the host plant and themselves. They have been found to provide direct benefits through nutrient acquisition and phytohormone production, as well as indirect benefits such as inducing resistance, producing antibiotics and secondary metabolites, producing siderophores, and protecting against abiotic and biotic stresses. The mechanisms of these interactions are discussed in depth.

Tomatoes: An Extensive Review of the Associated Health Impacts of Tomatoes and Factors That Can Affect Their Cultivation

Edward J. Collins et al.

Summary: This review paper discusses the potential health benefits of a diet enriched with tomatoes and tomato products. It covers various aspects such as the anticancer properties, cardiovascular and neurodegenerative disease prevention, maintenance of a healthy gut microbiome, improved skin health, fertility, immunity, and exercise recovery. The specific components of a tomato fruit that contribute to these benefits are also outlined. The paper also discusses the potential disadvantages, such as overconsumption of tomato supplements containing compounds like lycopene. The impact of cultivation techniques on the nutritional value of harvested tomatoes is also discussed.

Desert-adapted fungal endophytes induce salinity and drought stress resistance in model crops

Mahdieh S. Hosseyni Moghaddam et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effects of inoculating halotolerant endophytic fungi recovered from desert plants on drought and salinity stress tolerance in model agricultural plants. The fungal symbiosis increased chlorophyll concentration and plant growth under all levels of salinity and drought stress, with different stress resistance mechanisms observed in different endophyte-associated plants. These findings provide novel insights into the eco-physiological mechanisms of fungal endophyte-mediated stress tolerance in cucumber and tomato plants, highlighting the potential applications of arid and saline habitat adapted endophytes in agriculture.

To grow or survive: Which are the strategies of a perennial grass to face severe seasonal stress?

Thomas Keep et al.

Summary: This study examined the intraspecific variability in strategies to face drought and frost within perennial ryegrass and identified a trade-off between growth potential and dehydration or frost stress survival. The research highlights the importance of seasonal modulation of growth potential for plant adaptation under severe chronic abiotic stresses, emphasizing the need to integrate phenological traits as key components of plant strategies for future regional distribution under climate change.

Abiotic Stress and Reactive Oxygen Species: Generation, Signaling, and Defense Mechanisms

Swati Sachdev et al.

Summary: Climate change has devastating effects on plants, leading to the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) as byproducts of oxygen consumption. While excessive ROS can disrupt cellular homeostasis, moderate levels can activate growth and stress responses in plants, though the exact mechanisms are not fully understood. Advancements in modern techniques like molecular priming and crop modeling offer potential solutions for managing ROS levels in plants under stress.

Genome-Wide Analysis of DEAD-box RNA Helicase Family in Wheat (Triticum aestivum) and Functional Identification of TaDEAD-box57 in Abiotic Stress Responses

Jing-Na Ru et al.

Summary: In this study, a comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the DEAD-box RNA helicase family in wheat was conducted, identifying a total of 141 TaDEAD-box genes unevenly distributed across all 21 chromosomes. TaDEAD-box57-3B was significantly up-regulated under multiple abiotic stresses, and it improved tolerance to drought, salt, and cold stress in transgenic plants through regulating the degree of membrane lipid peroxidation. This study provides new insights for understanding evolution and function in the TaDEAD-box gene family.

The role of amino acid metabolism in signaling and metabolic adaptation to stress-induced energy deficiency in plants

Bjoern Heinemann et al.

Summary: Plants adapt their metabolism to stress-induced energy deficiency by undergoing significant changes in amino acid metabolism. Amino acids can act as alternative substrates for respiratory pathways and also as signaling molecules in response to stress. The regulation of amino acid metabolism during energy deprivation is controlled by the balance between TOR and SnRK signaling, with some amino acids potentially serving as nutrient signals to promote a shift from catabolic to anabolic pathways.
